ok so my client got a virus, i tried everything to remove

i reload windows xp and kept the file system, still the virus was there

i phoned the client told her i need to format, my client was happy

so i format the pc

when it load it comes up in the old windows style with no nice graphics and i cannot change it

it went straight from the box where you click ok then yes straight into windows without asking for a name and to setup internet

i tried another hdd and same problem

whenever i have loaded xp it always comes with nice graphics not the old style

could the virus have infected other hardware for this to happen?

hope this all makes sense

metamorphic virus can hang out in printer RAM.

Was the box connected to adsl router while windows installed? It might have skipped that step because it could access internet fine anyway. Not sure whether windows does that but I guess it might.

Try taking out the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

Could also be a virus that "flashed" the bios via EEPROM, but I doubt it.

Maybe also check the virus name online for the exact specs of it.

Sounds funky.

yea there where about 30 different ones

i have never seen windows not do that whole name ****, i have seen it miss the internet if it finds it but it always asks you for a name before loading

will try that cmos thing see if it helps

o yes avast said it could not load because there was a virus in the memory

i just thought it meant in windows, could it have meant the actual memory?

yup same

ive tried home and pro both original with legal cd keys
I think Saule was asking if these were original MSoft pressed cds not if you had a license just in case there was a virus on the cd.

yes bwana i said both home and pro where original with legal cd keys

yes original microsoft pressed disks

i've used those same disks to install tons of pc's

Such instances I put the disk in a Linux box, dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdaX bs=1M count=1024

Then I format it in to a ext3 file system.

In windows I can then recreate the filesystem. If it is a virus, it might reside on your bootsector.

Figured as much.

Not having had much experience with viruses I'll step back now. :)

yea i thought it might be the boot sector till i changed to a totally different hdd

yea bwana i got some experience but normally a format is all good but not in this case it seems as if its infected some hardware lol

dont know if this is actually possible

HAVOC THANX DUDE

i took out the battery booted up shut down put it back in and its working again
