Rubbish. We take our dogs to the same vet often and many times they have done surgeries and allow us time to pay for it. A professional vet will help you and understand that you may need to pay at a later stage. Obviously you need to have been a client of said prof for awhile.

Oh right, so the 1am emergency vet (1 in dozens) - you gotta be a customer for ages. The other thousands of people don't factor into your (as usual) fscking pathetic response?

Did you read the OP? As usual you fking didn't read it did you.

Shame feeling a bit agro today, slap your meds back bro. Chill. I know my vets emergency number. Why would it be random? You assume i phone some random vet for emergencies haha, nope i phone my vet direct if my dogs are in serious trouble. Maybe you don't stick to one practice but i do and i have known them for over a decade. I mentioned knowing the vet and going to them often because that is what the OP said. Reading OP is not your strong point i guess.

Read the OP FFS and chill out. You seem a bit more agro than usual.

OP: I will highlight a few things for you DJ

Actually, Im really flycked off. I have an emergency with our dog and I called the vet asking that since its an emergency, I know I wont have enough to cover the bill so can I pay what I have and the rest month end. I have been going to this vet for years and spent a small fortune..last year it cost us close on 2.5k for them to tell us our dog was dying and then have her put down which I paid happily. When I called now, they were very reluctant, ummed and ahhed and said that the R500 I do have will cover the sedation and consult and then the vet will call me to discuss further. Take note, this is the first time I have needed them in an emergency. I take this dog every few months to have his ears cleaned(at 1k a time) so its not like they only see me once every few years.

I dont know if Im being ridiculous to be fuming, I know they are a business etc but when did money come before animal care especially since I have a history of always paying up front! When the vet calls, I feel like telling him this is the last time he will be seeing one of our pets and finding a new vet so what are your thoughts on this? Am i expecting too much??

Lawd, last 2 weeks have seen mechanical bills, sick children etc etc and now this?
Throw this bytch a bone plse!!!!! :p

Really DJ start to fking read

If that professional is not willing to help he should re-evaluate himself as a decent human being. If a dog is in big need of help and you know the client well and they have paid well in the past, you help them. At least that is the world i live in. Either the dog dies because the owner doesn't have money or help the owner and wait until they are in a position to pay. It isn't bargaining if said professional knows his clients. It isn't bargaining if the person has paid well in the past but this time around they can't pay for whatever reason but then again money over morals is generally how people work so maybe you live in a world where it's money or death.

Read the fking OP and replies FFS :p o and chill the F out kido

My point still stands considering you were making a general statement, as was I. FFS, I hate arguing with you. It's like arguing with a kid. Carry on if you wish. I really am not bothered...

You never read the OP and linked it to my reply, that is not my fault. This isn't an argument. If you read the OP it clearly mentions she uses the practice often. Then read my post. Then calm down and reply in a decent manner kido.

You didn't swear so you must have calmed down and realized your reply was a bit much.

my statement was not general, it was situational because I READ THE OP

OP hasnt responded yet? Sigh.

Some people have so much problems with dogs.

Buy yourselves one of the "terrier" species (Jack Russel, Foxterrier, Staffy, Bull Terrier, Some of the smaller wired hair terriers, Airedale terrier), and you will will cut your problems in half.

+1 We got ourselves a Jack Russel Miniature, and that dog has been poisoned twice and its still alive! (our Staffy unfortunately died) I'm telling you those dogs are rock solid.

Had a friend who was a vet he got milked dry because of helping and people not paying when they said they would. His love for animals caused him to go out of business.

The only good way for a vet to stay solvent is for him/her to have a hard-ass receptionist.

We had tons of problems with the multi-vet practises and a few of my cat/dogs dying due to them slacking with treatment or doing it wrong and we still had to settle the huge bill over R3000.

Sometimes they even told me it wasn't serious and sent me home and they ended up dying during the night.

Now I use a vet whos by herself and works at home and never had problems with her and shes very reasonable and allows you to pay at the end of the month.

My pets have been healthy and well for a few years now thanks to the new vet and when my friend had a sick kitten with a kidney failure I told him to take it to her since shes caring and never charged to look at it and diagnose it before it died in his arms and also cries with you when it happens.

So shes the best vet ever :D

I took my dog for a general check-up and innoculations. She smelled like death itself ... I did not have to point this out to the vet. He commented on the smell not being "like a dog would smell" but rather a dog that rolled in something. He gave me a lecture on washing my dog at least a couple of times a year and also commented on her collar smelling bad.
3 Weeks later and after a bath, the smell persisted. She seemed to be in pain, so back to the vet. Fortunately a lady vet was on duty. She checked the dog's anal glands and voila, the cause of the smelly problem! She smelled even worse after her anal glands were cleaned but she is definitely a much happier dog.

So now I'm considering a training course in cleaning anal glands :wtf: ... considering the cost and the fact that the first vet did not even bother to check but charged me a fortune and gave me a speach about not keeping my dog 'clean'. Just by the way, does anyone know whether blocked anal glands are chronic and how often does one have to check it out / clean it? (the smell is horrific, worse than anything I've ever smelled!)

I'm sure it is tough to be a vet and to have to make life/death decisions and to consider finances. When a dog is in pain or clearly not well, it is inhumane to turn a person away simply because they cannot afford it.

Sounds like that vet is just in it for the money, find a vet that is passionate about his job.

That's the plan.
Can an 'ordinary' person (like me) clean a dog's anal glands? (with gloves on of course!)

I want to respond, I can't right now.....I'm so freking upset, I will let you know what happened...he has been treated...I have taken photos of his misfortunes...Christ, I want to scream but won't yet...the husband says he will sort it out but somehow i doubt it.

My dog was seen to...that's the main thing I guess.

You don't just clean them, you need to squeeze them tighter to prevent leakage and stench.

eeeek, not sure if I can do it. I do know the glands are below the anus and you have to squeeze them. If a lady vet can do it, then surely I can also do it. ...still not something that I really want to do but I once did help when she gave birth. That wasn't so bad. :)

Yea that is why is very important to ensure the clients you help are ones you know and have a good track record. Either way he is a great person who is obviously very passionate about his job even if meant he went out of business.

Better than dj's money or dead dog way. Trust your clients who have been good clients for years.

I had a cat. Took her to the vet twice.... in 16 years. She died a natural peaceful death, asleep next to my mom.

Are you one of those "panic parents" where if your kid/dog has a stuffy nose you run to the doctor?

Not at all, my kids must be on their death beds before I even consider one second of my time wasted taking them to the doc! :)
