Video calls over internet

Hi, if I wanna make video call over the internet do I have to get skype or can I just get a webcam and a mike?

I make "Video calls" to my mate overseas using skype and yahoo messenger.
I run the webcam through yahoo and then talk over skype. I'm sure there is a better way though.

You could use pretty much any IM app that supports a webcam and skype to do a vid call.

Why not look at VSkype? (Festoon)

I think that Vskype (now called festoon) is available which does away with Yahoo Messenger. I can't use this yet as it's only available on Windows, but my brother uses it to great success.
