Handbrake.

If you get to know mencoder really really well and have lots of time to experiment, you can make even better rips.

Best is a relative term, what is best for me is not best for you, what should the converter be best at? What features are you looking for? What have you tried and why are you not happy with the applications you tried?

If you did this minimal effort I would be more than happy to assist you, otherwise learn to use Google?

+1 Handbrake. Just check if you are running Ubuntu Lucid, you most likely will have to use the new builds via the PPA. The deb download didn't want to work with my system.

I swear by handbrake.

However mencoder is at least as good if you are comfortable with the command line

The thing I really appreciate about Handbrake is the queue, and abeing able to pause and restart the queue. Like now, I've got about 25 items in the queue, and I want to stop it when I go to bed. Sweet.
