Video game performers striking over AI use

Voice actors and performers who work in the video-game industry voted to authorise a strike ahead of their contract negotiations this week.

The vote only authorizes a strike. The union, SAG-AFTRA, is scheduled to begin talks with video-game studios on Tuesday.

Video-game voice actors are concerned that, without adequate contractual protections, AI may reproduce or remix their voices without consent or commensurate payment.
I thought the concern would be AI synthesizing it's own voices putting them out of work. Why would they bother remixing their voices?

As a former shop steward myself, I fully support these actors voting to strike should current negotiations with gaming studios fail. I'ts high time the gaming industry comes to the party to ensure that acting in games becomes a viable career. Gaming studios are not shy to ask exorbitant prices for their games making millions of dollars profit and it's not channeled to the gaming actors like in the move industry.

Its a dead career path for the most part. They might be able to squeeze a few more years from it but the majority won't be needed in the next decade or so.

Yeah this is like that Gizmodo logic. Fire the whole team to end up destroying your company with a shitty product.
Nah. I know AI can do allot. But they will be needed. People are quick to say AI will replace things, but AI is still pretty stupid phase. And these guys will have their rights protected before 10 years time.
If the industry starts using fake actors and voice it'll destroy itself.

People already can't tell the difference between an ai thot and a real one so its closer than you think.

The fact that you say you are a "former shop steward" immediately tells me your opinion is not worth the pixels on the screen.
Thanks to SA I hate unions.

Honestly, these voice actors are going to find themselves out of a job because its easier to alter a speech model to sound more human than it is to deal with salary negotiations.
In my job I need to make synthetic voice prompts and we use the Microsoft Speech Studio, and I find it impressive how real and natural they sound. Its not perfect, but its damn near close.

Yes and no.
I can pick up AI generated text from fake thots on facebook all the time.
Same with articles, like wall street journalist uses AI for some of their articles (or the writers do).

Maybe with making fake voices, 3D models. But then they will have to train the AI from only original content.

I think there will be a big industry for AI generated content. And it'll try to move into the creative space, and it will get torn apart.
