Hey guys

I hope somebody was as mad as me to check the VIN assigned to their vehicle. :)
I need to find out the year model of my car(new Mazda 3 MPS WOOHOO!), and stumbled on the fact that my VIN should indicate it.
Suprised i was to find out the number allocated on my VIN, doesnt have a year assigned to it.
a VIN has a formula plus check character to validate it, and after testing i found out mine fails.
Does anydboy know if RSA assigns their own VIN numbers? or is it done at the manufacturer?

Please refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number

This seems just a bit odd, and i am not sure if it is worth the trouble of trying to "fix" it.

Any advice?

Is there a chance you bought a stolen vehicle?

A VIN number should indicate everything about the car. Model year will not always be indicated by 09, for example. Are you certain that you are reading it correctly?

I know that bikes (Non imports) have the enige number to indicate the year model.

It starts like this on Suzukis K6 or K7 which means the year is 2006 or 2007 and so forth. The models are also referred to as that. I'll have to check my CBR's engine number before I can confirm if it's the same for Hondas.

So I would assume the same would go for VIN numbers on car chassis

Well, he said its a new car, so I doubt its a stolen one. Direct from agent I gather.

Yup direct from Agent ( They obtained it from another branch though)

Anycase, the tenth digit in my VIN is a Zero, and quoting wiki :
"One consistent element of the VIS is the 10th digit, which is required (in North America) to encode the model year of the vehicle. Besides the three letters that are not allowed in the VIN itself (I, O and Q), the letters U and Z and the digit 0 are not used for the model year code. Note that the year code is the model year for the vehicle."

I also verified the VIN of my previous car, and the same fact applies. 0 for the year model.

Extremely odd if you ask me.

So long as you have the "Certificate of registration in respect of motor vehicle" papers and the VIN there is the same as on your car it's all good. That paper has all the relevant information on it.

The manufacturing date will most likely be very close to the "Date liable for registration" on that piece of paper, that is the OFFICIAL year of your car, the model they gave you may be 1 year off, especially if it was near the end of the year.

Buying or selling a car WITHOUT that paper is illegal, and obtaining a new one is quite a mission, if they didn't provide you with one I suggest you sort it out ASAP.

To put it in Hollywood terms that is the pink slip of your car.
