VLC player for Android (finnally) in development

Don't know if this has been posted before, but it seems they have finally started some serious work on an Android version. It only took about 3 years, so still way ahead of Duke Nukem Forever or Prey...

Maybe I can finally stop using rockplayer then. It works great, I'm just not too comfortable with the website and everything being in Chinese. Those squiggleys could say "by installing this you agree to sell your soul to us" and you'd never know.

Check XDA somewhere, not sure.
Well I am using it no problem for months now, plays everything and no issues, also has much louder volume than any other player.

I'm currently using Moboplayer. It works well enough (have a few minor annoyances), but it hasn't been updated since I installed it 6 months ago. So while we wait for VLC to mature, can anyone suggest real good video players for Android?

Rockplayer is actually the closest thing to VLC. The problem is like I said, it's Chinese and not available on the Market.

Android can play most divx/xvid movies out of the box, no need for 3rd party player. But VLC is great!

I use MX player, has Hardware decoding and I can stream HD content from my media server with it. Updates released regularly too.

Indeed, but it doesn't play .mkv and .avi files.

MX Player is awesome. Great user interface, holo themed, optimised for dual core, and plays every format I've ever thrown at it. It's cool that VLC for Android is getting closer to release, but to be honest, they would have to deliver something pretty amazing to tempt me away from MX Player.

Good point, but that's pretty much how VLC works, they do put out something that plays every video ever, in great quality. If it has that and the same streaming abilities as the desktop VLC, they have a legend on their hands.

I have been using VLC Direct Pro since I got my phone.
According to them their Google Play account has been suspended for no reason, and they are in the process of having it re-instated.
It can play any format, and is great for streaming movies from the PC to my phone or tablet.
You can choose the target where you want to stream a movie to, select it from the list, and hit play.
It also works as a remote control, so that I can pause,play, control volume and fast forward movies on my PC while sitting back and doing everything from my phone.

I don't mind the ads, because they only appear in the menus, not while you're watching an actual video. Since 99% of the time you spend using a video player is spent watching video rather navigating the interface, it's not a big problem.

That said, I don't watch a lot of video on my phone. If/when I get a tablet, I'll expect I'll pay for the ad-free version of MX Player.

That VLC development notice on Videolan's site has been there since March.
