VMC installation error with Windows Server 2003: 'Unsupported Platform'

Ok so I was overjoyed when I heard I can get my old 3g card swpped out for the new HSDPA cards. I raced to my service providers offices, got the card smiling all the way back.

Got back to office and uninstalled old software, then when installing new dashboard it happened. Error Unsupported Platform (also threw an error 1722).

Now I am stuck with no 3G at all :S

Please please please has anybody got a solution for this?

All help would be much appreciated.

P.s. I have allready tried running the setup in compatibility mode set to windows xp, but no luck

@ScubaDude, welcome to MyADSL :).

Maybe you could install the old s/w again, but manually update the drivers in Device Manager from the new s/w CD to the new HSDPA card - it may or may not work - perhaps wait for v3g's opinion on this...

3G software and Windows 2003 Server

I bought the 3g HSDPA datacard and tried to install the Vodafone Mobile Connect on my laptop running windows 2003 server, but i get the error message "Unsupported Windows platform" at the end of the installation and it rollsback the installation.

Can anyone please advise how to get around this or what the solution is if you have encountered this
 
Howzit

Before you click on the box to dismiss it do a search for insthelp.exe in the vodafone directory and make sure that you set its compatibility is set for windows xp and then restart the installation. It should succeed the second time round.

Fixed issue

Hi

Basically what i have done; When the program pops to say Platform not supported, i saw it was installed, so i opened task manager and killed the processes of the installation. Then i just opened the Vodafone Mobile Connect app and in the options told it to disable the Wireless LAN option, as this was causing the problem. Setting compatibility mode on the exe before setup does not allow the program to run any different.
 
Another fix that worked for us

Well that was a help Pierre, but it didn't fix our error. What we found was that when you terminated the program in Task Manager the install files were still deleted. Even copying them out before this and pasting them back after the terminate didn't help (but worth a try folks).

Instead we:

1. Left the error message where it was
2. Went into the Prog File/install dir for Vodafone
3. Ran the program
4. Tolerated the many error message windows (about OpCo something) but managed to get into Options --> Preferences where I unticked "Enable Wireless" (i.e. disabled Wireless) and clicked Okay
5. Then closed the Program and turned off the computer, rather than terminating the install task.

When the server rebooted we were able to fire up Vodafone Mobile Connect and connect.

Hope this helps someone else (it may be that the above solution will work for you as is).

Fix for OS: Windows Server 2003 - Standard Edition

Finally, a few days later, we ran a utility to fix the 1704 Installation Error (the fact you have allowed an installation to be semi-installed, can prevent other programs being installed until Windows is "happy" that the original error has been fixed!). Google a utility called E1704C.exe

This may be a cleaner sequence

Having recently bought an Huawei-E160X(K3565) PAYG USB modem on Vodafone UK, I have succeeded in installing it on Windows 2003 using the following five steps:

1) Grab the XP drivers from an Windows XP installation
Perform a normal installation on a Windows XP machine and save a copy of the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Driver\pccard\
(I used a VMware XP image for this)

2) Extract the Vodafone Mobile Connect.msi from setup_vmc_lite.exe
Run the standard installation on Windows 2003 to the point where the 'Unsupport Platform' dialog is displayed, then using ProcessExplorer, examine the msiexec commandline to find the above named MSI, and copy it somewhere safe.

2) Modify the MSI's set of Supported Platforms using Orca
Use Microsoft's Orca utility to adjust 2 of the 3 the rows in the "LaunchCondition" table as follows (insert/delete):
(Not Version9X=400) And (Not Version9X=410) And (Not Version9X=490) And (Not VersionNT=400) And (Not VersionNT=502)
(((VersionNT=500 And ServicePackLevel>=4) Or (VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or (VersionNT=502 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or (VersionNT>=600)) And AdminUser)

3) With the USB modem disconnected, run the modified Vodafone Mobile Connect.msi
Installation of the control software should now proceed without complaint.

4) Copy the pccard folder from step (1) to the same location
Copy the folder to the same location on Windows 2003:
C:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Driver\

5) Insert the USB modem and explicitly locate the drivers to install
For each of the two Huawei Mobile devices found by Plug and Play device discovery, nominate the driver installation files in the above folder.
 
I don't know if you'll ever read this, but this post on installing Huawei modems on Windows 2003 is F A N T A S T I C.

I used it to install Huawei's Vodafone pen K3765 (supporting HSUPA) in Portugal. It works!

The only difference is that for this pen, I didn't have to edit the first line of instruction 2), because it is not present in the MSI package LaunchCondition table.

I have been wondering for what reason they don't simply support Windows 2003?
