Hey all

I am thinking of dropping the Telkom Wimax (512kb) which has been stable for the last 5 years ruinning with an OW 1mb gold uncapped. The 2 together equate to around R500 as does the Vodacom offering.

The Vodacom offering includes "Vodafone R212Z Wi-Fi Router LTE". I have checked coverage and there is a LTE "block" on my property but it JUST misses the house...

1. Now i assume due to the block being a simple indication it is possible i may get LTE;
2. Can i play games over the internet from time to time with LTE/3G?

Is it a good move to make?

Thanks in advance.

Cant comment on LTE & game playing, but anything lower can result in lag which will in turn result in much profanities and broken peripherals.

If you have a LTE device, or know someone that does, get yourself a prepaid Vodacom SIM and buy a data bundle and try it out. That way you can properly test coverage and see what the latency is like.

Also remember, you can get external antenna's for LTE... check out the Poynting Antenna's (Antennae?) or the guys at Scoop / MIRO... If you thinking of going the LTE route, may be worth investing in it to get the better coverage and latency. I put one at a client and brought the latency down from about 250ms on a local ping to around 80ms and that was on a 3G connection...

How much data do average on the uncapped? I used to be on uncapped and averaged over 100 gig and then I moved to an area without adsl now I'm spending twice as much as I spent on uncapped and I hate it.

The positive though is that I get to see the sun and spend more time outside with my pet rabbit.

I believe that's subjective and depends on line speed, number of users, number of devices, usage habits and few others. It is in theory possible to limit yourself to email and browsing, then 10-20gb a month will suffice on capped/LTE.

I have VDSL 40Mbps at home, and my monthly usage varies from 40GB to 200Gb...

There's always Mweb WiFi at some places thats uncapped for free... so you can download there if you really need to...

The positive though is that I get to see the sun and spend more time outside with my pet rabbit.
Now that is a plus side worth having :D

Thats awesome to know. I will see if i can find someone with an LTE device and test it. If there IS signal then i'll go for it and do as you suggect and ad an antenna to help boost it

This is the problem - i asked the iSP what i used and they said last month i used 70GIG - on a 512kb line - is that even possible? But i don't think i would use that normally as i don't download a lot of movies. maybe the odd one and the rest is browsing and the odd update... now i need to think about it again!

I got used to putting twitch.tv on all day on weekends and falling asleep with it on. If you did that with your 10 gig you will be very unhappy. Now I have think about my data cap when big tournaments are on.

I'm not saying you should NOT go with Vodacom but maybe you should try out Afrihost? Runs on MTN LTE and you basically get the exact same deal with no contract just the 12Month device pay off time.

5GB + 5GB is R297 but it is a promotion
Huawei E5372 is R1599 once off or R200 for 12 months

So that is the same as the Vodacom deal but the data might not continue after December but it might also be extended. This is not a contract so you can cancel at any time. There is also no chance of going out of bundle but with Vodacom that could happen if something decides to download loads of data when you are not there.

After the 12 months you device is paid off which means you can increase you data.

Or maybe you should just take the afrihost plus+ service for R99 extra a month and be guaranteed of the data and 2 for 1 top ups.

Basically I'm just saying that make sure before signing a 24month contract. It's a long time and it's a risk when you go for a openline contract.
