Vodacom 12GB, 24GB pre-paid data prices unveiled (12 February 2013)

I actually had to go and put on my reading glasses to make sure that those prices were indeed what my eyes were telling me...

I've been a Vodacom subscriber for many years and I'm considering porting my number to CellC with my next upgrade, for 2 reasons:

* With a decent android based handset, I cannot struggle with Vodacom's shoddy data service. I live a in developed area and the best reception I get is 3G and at it's worse goes all the way down to GPRS. Constant webpages timing out on my tablet. It's really a joke!
* I just tested a prepaid CellC sim and bought 1GB data for R150, my goodness! That's like half the price I've been paying for my prepaid vodacom data sim. Also besides being that cheap, speeds are awesome (HSPA stable).

I'm sure many subscribers eyes will open soon ... hoping to see some big changes after Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona next week.

Pretty sure Jannie isn't happy with this, else he would have commented already... he knows he's on a hiding to nothing with this one. I'm pretty sure that this is just an interim pricing while the next promo is readied. If this is long term pricing then CellC and 8ta are going to give VC a serious hiding...

3G is kinda underwhelming in all respects. I need something stable that can maintain 512+ speeds. All of the 3G providers seem to alternate between 4mbps and 0mbps....which ensures that the VPN craps itself.

I've started just asking for the wifi pass at whatever business I'm at. With a bit of luck the wifi is connected to fiber. :D

If Red VIP is what I suspect it is then it could always be used to solicit comprehensive proposals :)

But back to reality:
I honestly don't get this product at whichever pricing from Vodacom's perspective - in contrast to when CellC did the big shift what 2 years ago, or 8ta's position- 1Gig or even 2Gig on a prepaid sim card in a dongle is easily ported customers who can bargain hunt - no need to port and no brand loyalty involved.

Basically I see it as involving a lot of capacity headaches for Vodacom without being able to competitively hold onto the market - 1Gb on a smartphone is great, 1Gb on a tablet is great but 1Gb for a PC is one set of rogue updates away from being a nuisance and 2Gb isn't much more. Other than pretending to compete with CellC on price/value - which they are failing at - it doesn't seem to give their lineup anything.

I'm pretty sure that this is just an interim pricing while the next promo is readied.

Even if Vodacom does have a brainfart and comes up with yet another promo (puke) designed to string people along until the next promo ad infinitum, there have to be lots of consumers that have decided to deprecate Vodacom in favour of competitors that are actually competitive.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Vodacom has become even less competitive since Scameelperd was announced as the new CEO of Vodacom and I don't see this illogical bean counter thinking changing any time soon.
