Vodacom and MTN 5G hit peak speeds of over 500Mbps and average speeds of 400Mbps in Gauteng

5G is a bigger white elephant than Fiber, it is good, if you have coverage. If not you buggered.

I am less than 300 meters, from fiber, and have been for years, it still has not come any closer. Same for 5 G - been here since MTN set it up. Coverage has not grown, and it has not come any closer.

Both may as well not exist.

this, in the real world having fantastic technologies are great and all, if you can get them, due to location, cost or availability.
Yes Ive got rain coverage, but as per my complaints, it barely works and is pointless complaining about it, especially when nobody cares.

yes you have fiber, but because your landlord lives in 1967, they wont agree for whatever reason to install it, so again your stuck.
so what is available and what is out there are 2 different things entirely.

An if you are living in a private property ask you ward councilor why they are holding up the municipal approval for a fiber provider to start trenching

again, more bureaucratic bungling and delays, all for something that is almost as important as sewerage and electricity
but again its considered a luxury, and Fiber isn't installed from the word go, so again people with a old school mindset holding up the process unnecessarily.

I mean they wouldn't think twice if it was a water line, or a electric pylon, but Fiber, oh we have to think about it.

I would expect MTN to be better overall, given they have allocated 700mhz bands to it. It will be way better indoors than Vodacom

While I like MTN what they did this month is scummy, they added 5G data to my contract for free, allocated 400 gig 5G specific data. While a nice idea MTN is well aware, a 100 people has 5G coverage so really no loss to them.Wish I could make use of the data.....:(

5G and LTE does not work in parts of Bryanston. We tried Rain and it gave no signal on LTE and a miserable signal on 5G -useless in my opinion. We tried the outside aerial together with a Rain representative and it did not help at all. We are in an slight dip in Bryanston Drive next to the Country Club and battle to get even 3G. Upstairs in some rooms 3G is available on MTN but down stairs it is not. Vodacom 3G is not available anywhere in the garden or the house. A Vodacom rep came to the house to prove that 3G was available but left saying that he had never seen this before. Needless to say, it has been like this since 3G was introduced, never mind LTE and 5G. We now use Cool Ideas fibre at 1G down and 200mb up. It works great except that Vumatel has been intermittent for the past few weeks. Just saying.....

So Vodacom 5G just popped up on my P40 Lite 5G. Doesn't show on the map at all. Speeds are good. Prices not so much.

This speedtest used 1GB data to complete. I had to buy a R12/1GB for 1 hour bundle just to do this speedtest. That is almost $1 per speedtest. I just don't understand why Vodacom would let a tower like this just sit idle because data is too expensive... They can at least launch cheaper 5G only data bundles.
