What surprises me is that rogue WASPs have been abusing Vodacom and MTN’s systems for years. They know about it. But despite this, they still put the controls in the WASPs hands.

The big question is – what other subscriber data is available to WASPs without people’s knowledge? What else is sold to third parties?
" Unlawful provision of real-time or archived communication-related information .. 50. (1 ) Any telecommunication service provider or employee of a telecommunication service provider who intentionally provides or attempts to provide any real-time or archived communication-related information to any person other than the customer of the telecommunication service provider concerned to whom such real-time or archived 15 communication-related information relates, is guilty of an offence. communication-related information as contemplated in sections 13. 14 and 15. (2) Subsection (1) does not apply to the provision of real-time or archived "

What the cell companies have done is clearly against RICA .
The information on tracking is only available on presentation of a 205 from law reinforcement .

I wonder if Telkom and CellC also have skeletons in the closet? I would expect all in the industry to behave similarly.

It's a massive issue with me that you are not in control of your own information. Between Google and the networks they really know everything about you

Key phrase "other than the customer of the telecommunication service provider concerned to whom such real-time or archived communication-related information relates"

Oh, we thought the customer had given permission. Oops, silly mistake...

Has anyone ever signed up for a wasp service. Ever?

Why are we creating such a huge security risk for a service no one wants? (except the wasps).

Do Vodacom make enough money off wasps that theyre willing to let people die for it?

Their primary function is to make profit ethics and morals probably not in their top 10 things todo.

Customer data being sold by network operators to third parties without the customer's knowledge, basically business as usual.

Despite feigned outrage by the implicated network operator(s), this will continue unchecked until directors/executives of those companies are held personally liable, preferably starting with criminal charges, followed by being sued in civil cases.

If network operators wanted to act responsibly, they would have moved to an explicit opt-in model where customers have to explicitly give consent for any of their personal data (as well as airtime) to be shared with third parties (in particular WASPs).
