Jason,

The Vodacom web site is not letting go of any information, sadly we don't get This Day here, so I couldn't read up on this, however, I might offer a guess.

If Vodacom is to be offering broadband, you can be almost certain it will be 3G based. Expect the same kind of speed and reliability (or lack of both) that you could currently get from Sentech, as they also use UTMS TDD (3G) wireless technology.

The only difference is that Vodacom will probably launch with national coverage instead of just a few limited coverage areas.

Both Vodacom and MTN have in the past let on that they are testing 3G and looking into the possibilities of licensing frequencies for it from ICASA, this might just be the culmination of those efforts into an actual service to compete with Sentech.

Once Vodacom gets this working, expect the other two cellular networks to follow suit quickly.

From the various press releases, Vodacom and MTN have been granted temporary 3G licenses by ICASA. However, it was also mentioned that it is expected to be costly compared to current offerings. Cost was also the main reason the technology has not taken off in Europe, even though it has been available there for some years. There has been limited success in Japan though.

Vodacom's not gonna be cheap as they're 50% owned by Hellkom.

Limited success? Haha. Where are you from? KDDI is a huge success.

it is limited rollout, looks like the next month. minimum 256k with an optional upgrade to 384k. 3G is not gonna be cheap they are spending millions and millions on the base stations, that is why it is gonna be a limited roll out.
