Hi everyone,

I’d like some input from others who might have been in the same boat as I am now.

I signed up for a fibre deal with vodacom on a month to month basis with free installation and a router

I’ve given Vodacom 1 months notice to cancel my month to month contract and they now wanna charge me a R2000 cancellation fee because I haven’t been on this plan for 24 months

My experience with previous month to month contracts is that I only had to give one months notice and return the router

Has anyone else had this issue and avoided paying the cancellation fee.

I noticed even on month to month on vodacom you will get charged if you cancel before a year. I saw it in their terms and conditions.

It's probably for the router and installation costs, many companies do this.

Nothing is free. Keep that in mind here. Did you read the Ts and Cs?

While you’re on month to month, nothing stops an operator from claiming back their costs. And this is the real cost for a provider to sign you up. If it was in your Ts and Cs, you’ll need to pay it.

@marine1 ICASA doesn’t care. The client agreed to terms which cover them in the event a client cancels early and their upfront costs aren’t covered yet.

A 24 month contract means you’re liable for the full value of the contract (terms depending) when you terminate early. Try terminating a vodacom cell contract early and you’ll see. Month to month simply means you can cancel early without paying the remaining contract term. It doesn’t preclude any termination/cancellation fees.

@Michaelrssa next time, make sure you ask what the cancellation fees are, know they’re coming and choose the sp that gives you the most competitive deal here. Some ISPs give you a proportionately smaller cancellation fee depending on your term and write this down after a short period. Just read the Ts as Cs. They’re binding.

And don’t choose vodacom. They’re a company that’s only done business on 24 month contracts in the past- they have a whole legal team in house to enforce this... They also know how to make month-to-month terms that are in their favour, they’re not about to lose a cent.

21. Vodacom does not warrant an uninterrupted Vodacom Fibre service and does not offer quality of service, uptime and throughput guarantees.
28. Any Vodacom Fibre service contract which includes free or discounted customer equipment can only be renewed or cancelled without any penalty after the initial contract period.
29. When a Vodacom Fibre service contract is terminated during the initial contract period, an early cancellation penalty will apply, equivalent to all of the remaining subscriptions due for the initial period.
86. The cost of the router provided is recovered over a 24 month period for 24 month price plans and over 12 months for 12 month and month-to-month price plans.
89. The recovery costs is calculated as follows for 12 month and month-to-month price plans : 12 months – total months on the existing price plan = balance X CPE cost / 12
91. Example: A customer on a month-to-month price plan who cancels their contract in month 6 will be liable for the remainder of the cost associated with the router. The recovery costs is calculated as follows: 12 month – 6 months = 6 months X CPE cost / 12

Their routers don't cost that much TBH. And according to the CPA, returning the equipment should satisfy this need and can't be forced on the consumer when cancelling a contract. That includes silly "you owe us R100 x months left over of the contract" because that's like paying for a car you already traded in just because the finance period didn't expire yet.
