I'm not sure if t his is the correct forum for this post, however I feel that my story does have to be told somewhere.

I signed up for a family top-up contract with Vodacom last year. At the time, I was unable to prove that I earned a fixed income and as such, the contract was put under the name of my mother. I have recently begun to receive credit card, loan, car and health insurance calls on my number from telemarketers, who wish to all speak to my mother. The issue here is that the only person or entity who knows that the phone is really under the name of my mother, is Vodacom.

How else then do telemarketers get hold of my number and refer to the client as my mother (contract holder) instead of myself?

Not only does it seem obvious that they got it from Vodacom but do I also know that they get it from Vodacom because some of my acquaintances told me that when the asked the telemarketers about where they got their number from, they told them from their service provider. Need I say more ?

They probably got it from Vodacom or your service provider. It's not a conspiracy though, as it is perfectly legal for vodacom/service provider to sell their client details to other companies.

You should be able to get vodacom to remove your name/number from their lists though.

As far as i'm aware, it's not legal for vodacom to sell your details/information on with out your consent.

I've said the same over and over and been howled at by the Vodacom fanboyz, including the 'official' rep. I'm a customer, I'm convinced. Who else needs to be convinced?

Thanks for the feedback so far.

When I asked one of the telemarketers to remove me from their contact list, she said that she did not have access to do so. I proceeded to ask her to put me through to someone who can, and she replied by saying that she is also not authorised to do so.

I guess I'll just have to reject all private number calls from now onwards.

Pretty much my policy, If you don't want me to know who's calling, I'm sure I don't want to talk to you.
