If the phone supports EDGE, you will be able to access the EDGE speeds in EDGE coverage areas even when on the 3G package.paola said:If I have an Edge enabled phone such as the Sony Ericsson P900, will I be able to utilise the faster Edge connection over GPRS with a Vodafone 3G package?
i think the reduced rates only apply to 3g/gprs, whilst hsdpa/edge are charged at the 'normal' ratesMams said:...The 3G package at reduced rates allows access to GPRS,EDGE and 3G and the HSDPA package at the old rates allows access to the same + HSDPA...

lol, i have, it's just been (and apparently still is) a little confusing to meic said:Not entirely, see the sticky threads about how the new tariffs work...

I see the whole new tariff structure in a very simplistic way:
You buy a maximum speed capability.
If you have a HSDPA card (or phone), you pay the higher tariffs, irrespective of your actual connection type at any point in time, be it GPRS, EDGE, 3G or HSDPA.
If you have a 3G device (card or phone), you pay the lower tariffs, irrespective of your actual connection type at any point in time, be it GPRS, EDGE or 3G.
If you have a GPRS or EDGE device, you pay the lower tariff.
SonyEricsson P900 does not have EDGEpaola said:If I have an Edge enabled phone such as the Sony Ericsson P900, will I be able to utilise the faster Edge connection over GPRS with a Vodafone 3G package?

ic said:I suspect that JK8 is suggesting that it would be better to have speed determined by the APN that a customer uses [and more importantly is authorised by Vodacom to use], e.g. have an APN that limits the customer to maximum vanilla-3G speed, and another APN that allows the customer to use max HSDPA speed, the customer could then buy an HSDPA data card cash if they need EDGE [e.g. using it in an area that has zero 3G|HSDPA coverage], and be on the lower-tariffed maximum vanilla-3G speed and still get EDGE on an HSDPA data card...or something like that...
