Vodacom Fibre Sales Order completed before Infrastructure Available?? WTF.

So I had some Vodacom fibre agents very aggressively knocking on doors, flagging down traffic, making a big song and dance about fibre internet in my area.

One day I decide to stop and see what the fuss is about.

The agent reckons that we should sign up now to be the first in line for Fibre access for the service coming "very soon" to my neighbourhood. I remind them that no infrastructure exists in the vicinity to but these guys are adamant its coming with the next "few months". Agents are happy go lucky, and promise me free installation etc, so I fall for their charms and sign up for a 50/5mbps Vumatel package on a month-to-month basis. NO CONTRACT obviously but still spend the time filling in forms and sending emails for proof of ID etc etc. All seems very formal and therefore makes it seem that much more likely to happen. Excitement begins to build.

A week or two go by and suddenly the Wifi router arrives at my door; now my excitement grows further because I figure perhaps the infrastructure will be coming sooner rather than later.

Well..... needless to say the router is now gathering dust, I get no updates and not Vodacom nor Vumatel are very forthcoming on exactly WHEN the fibre is projected to be laid in my suburb. What kind of idiotic business practice is this? This is very much like saying "Congratulations on your new Car Mr Bloggs, We'll send you the keys shortly but we wont tell you when you Car will arrive."

Surely Vumatel should be concerned about this as it seems Vodacom are making promises on their behalf that they probably cant keep. That's how I take it anyways.

1. Are any of you in the same situation?
2. Have you any positive stories to tell if so?

Perhaps in the end, its all just another very aggressive tactic that helps Vumatel with its "Show Interest" campaign and I think its very distasteful to make people sign forms, divulge personal details and get their hopes up for something that potentially is just a dead end.

Your guys thoughts on this would be appreciated.

At least Vodacom did not pull their usual stunts and sign you up for LTE in the meantime "Until Fibre arrives" and actually bill you...

They are trying...I’m not biting. Let’s see how that affects the deal going forward.

I signed up for the same service in December. Router was delivered in Jan, it is now May and still no fibre!

That's insane. I think what @WickedMonkey eluded to is quite interesting. If you ask me this sounds like a scam by Vodacom to force you into buying an LTE package until Vumatel finally decide to grace our area with their presence.

I signed up in November/December 2018, router was delivered by courier in January 2019, Vumatel started digging end of March 2019, sounds like our suburb will be fibre ready end of June.

Ok so 6-8 months in your case. May I ask which suburb?

I have been following this post with interest. Same thing happened to me. In February 2019 Vodacom sales team were aggressively promoting aerial fibre in our suburb. I foolishly signed up and the router arrived via Ram couriers delivered early in March 2019. The Vodacom coverage map showed that fibre infrastructure was currently being installed in the area.

April, May and June passed without any news and the Vodacom coverage map was updated to show the status as 'no fibre available in your area'. I was speechless. There goes any hope of getting fibre anytime soon.

On Wednesday 3rd July 2019 trenching began in our street and on Saturday, a grey box was installed on our boundary wall. There was zero communication from Vumatel before the trenching started.

My question is - Am I obligated to use Vodacom as an ISP seeing that the router was delivered by them? I no the special offer included a "free" router, "free" installation and "free" activation.

I am prepared to return the router and pay Vumatel for the home installation na any activation fee so that I can use Cool Ideas or Home Connect as the preferred ISP.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks for this thread.

They did the exact same song and dance and stopping of traffic in the neighborhood this weekend, and I was just about to sign up in the hope that we will get fibre soon.

Now I'd rather take a wait and see approach before handing over the bank details.

Also, from their website they are stating the following:

"Dark Fibre Africa (DFA) is the Vodacom Fibre 3rd Party Network Provider."

Is this still the case?

Guys, I live in South Hills and this tactic was utilized by Telkom consultants I signed up for a 50mb fiber package as they had promised that fiber was soon to be installed. Anyways I went through the process of signing up in January but soon realized they were going to give me a LTE package in the interim. The courier guy came to deliver the device and I refused to accept it they eventually cancelled the application. It is now July and fiber in my area has not been installed. Don’t fall for these scams unless the infrastructure is in place then only put pen to paper.

Also for me the BIG HUGE question to ask is, is Vodacom Fibre based on an Open Access model or do you get the fibre and Vodacom is the only isp? then that would be a huge deal breaker for me. as i'd like to change isp if im not happy with the service i'm getting from them.

Vodacom is the only ISP on Vodacom Fibre.
Vodacom ISP is however an ISP on other fibre networks like Openswerve and Vuma and SADV and so on.

Every single network operator (even Openserve has DFA backhaul links) in SA uses DFA backhaul at some point in their infrastructure.
