Vodacom has big broadband plans: FTTH, LTE and 3G

Meh.. their idea of FTTH is fibre to the house (ONLY if you live in a gated community)...

So scratch that one.

They have to start somewhere. We have all been saying for years someone should at least target the low hanging fruit. As the network grows and gets paid off they can expand to less populated areas.

I'm really glad to see vodacom is stepping up to the plate. No doubt they will do a better job than neotel (which is rather amusing all things considered). Neotel is/was a rubbish SNO.

Someone with deep pockets and a lot of existing infrastructure and expertise deciding to get into FTTH is big news. You'd think these threads would see more discussion.

find this very interesting .... vodacom taking on telkom in their home turf ...
considering that not too long ago, vodacom was part of telkom ... how things have changed :)

glad that someone is actually starting to take a bite at the last mile and not leaving it to be the sole domain of telkom

“While we are doing this we may as well connect housing estates, densely populated areas and the businesses along the way.”

“So we see fibre to the home and fibre to the business as a key strategy for us going forward,” said Joosub.

That's what i'm talking about,no excuses just commitment and sound planning....and of course lot's and lot's of CAPEX.I like.

:( Sadly won't ever get to experience FTTX from Vodacom here in the sticks, but hey, will be happy for others.

Now we know why they want to buy Neotel.

Agreed.Very excited by this even if we only see the benefits 5 years from now.At least it's a start.
You can already see the urgency with which Telkom is responding. Its like they finally caught a F..... wake up.

Access means nothing without good pricing, and knowing Vodacon...

with a captive market (ie: no local loop access for other ISPs)...

good luck!

Nope, not just gated communities.

That is good news :)

A few things bother me: Vodacom's high tariffs to date; Vodacom should be a wholesale FTTH/FTTC provider (network operator), Vodacom should make it attractive for retailers and customers to get the economies of scale that Vodacom will need to make FTTH/FTTC "sustainable".

Does Vodacom actually do uncapped ADSL yet?

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub told Moneyweb’s Hilton Tarrant that they see an opportunity to increase their 3G penetration to 100% of the South African population.

Do the Tracey-Lee Dornys know they too will be penetrated by Vodacom's 3G, or is that penetration percentage closer to 99.999999998%?

Not on my side (consumer). If possible, I'd like to sjip copper and go straight to fibre.

BTW, if the pricing is not market related, no-one would buy it.

Don't start...... :)

BTW, got confirmation; all financial reporting is ex-VAT.
