I just got my latest statement. Vodacom actually charged me for premium mail. I never subscribed to it. Called in 3 days ago. They have not responded.

During the call they did say something about me activating the service on 1 October. The only thing I did was to switch from wekender to topup on that date. I think there is a bug somewhere. They said they would look into it, but I still got incorrect statement today.

Vodacom3G, pleas follow up for me.... or VodacomSP or whoever.

I just checked on Vodacom4me now again. I am definately not subscribed to premium mail option.

I need to be credited for that R29.

same thing happened to me, but ive figured out what happened in my case. If you subscribe to a data bundle you get the premium mail for free (so its activated)...now when you cancelthe bundle the email is no longer free and they dont cancel it...also still trying to sort it out as inever used this email.

I thought you had to activate it before you got it free with a 500MB+ bundle. It seems very inefficient to allocate mailboxes to people that don't even know they have them.

There is no such thing as free mail from service providers, it is merely a fish hook with some bait on it.

To confirm, you did not have a contract but a data bundle? On this you got the free mailbox.

You then downgraded your bundle to a lower (even 0) size and you got charged for the mailbox?

If you can PM the exact sequence of events, plus your details I'll have it sorted out for you.

Vodacom should really start thinking about a free mail box with at least 50mb of memory. Do you see any other ISP with such a poor mail service? Who in their right mind will charge for an email account?

IMO there are very few essential uses for an email account provided by one's ISP, get and use a GMail account instead, and maybe forward your email from your GMail account to your ISP-specific mailbox in case international connectivity from SA dies - then access your forwarded [by GMail] email from your ISP-specific mailbox whilst waiting for international connectivity to be restored.

Well it won't help forwarding from Gmail if you only have 5mb storage space from your ISP.

Remember that my suggestion is only to offer a solution to not being able to get to GMail when international connectivity from SA dies, so the idea is that one should decide which emails are important enough to forward [maybe everything is], you can tell GMail to forward only certain emails by creating a filter that forwards.

Using IS ADSL, I often have a problem where international dies when I'm waiting for an email to arrive in my GMail inbox, but I'm hooked on GMail and not prepared to let a little temporary disconnectivity phase me, so if there is an urgent email I can simply go and check on my ISP-specific local email account which I often clear out - it's a hassle but better than trying to use a 5MB mailbox for all of one's email...

Try GMail, if you don't like it, then you haven't really tried it...

Only one problem, how do you set it up if you can't access your GMail when international is dead. I suppose you could set it up permanently and then automatically purge your Voda Mailbox every day or so which should be enough time to restore connectivity. Or forward all mail and then pop it from Voda.

Why go through all this trouble when there is cheap cellular connectivity? Use Virgin as backup. :D

Of course I meant that one does the necessary creation of filters to forward email before international dies, and these would probably be semi-permanent filters for really important emails.

Just about any local ISP-specific mailbox would do as a backup.

Still too much trouble setting up filters just in case all international links die. And I would most likely forget to purge my enormous Vodacom mailbox and not be able to receive any of it. Would rather use Virgin. ;) :D
