As a matter of interest Vodacom folded their lte.vodacom.za APN into the standard internet APN way back as far as late 2013 obviating the need to set your device APN to LTE to receive LTE service. Just set it to internet APN and your LTE device should receive the service.
Jannievanzyl/VodacomData can confirm the exact date of the merge. Yes some call centre and Shop assistance are not aware of this fact. :)

Some tests I've done before seem to back this like Blackberry and Android works on lte.vodacom.za and internet for LTE but something is causing iPhone to sometimes show the "no service" on the top left if it is not set to lte.vodacom.za but this could have just been my simcard that had a problem.

Why have separate APNs in any case while charging the same rates?

I asked this very question a while ago while in training for network fundamentals. The answer was traffic and load control.
