Vodacom, MTN must reduce prices by 50% and give users free data

A slippery slope.... why not follow with the big retailers, start prescribing them to drop all their prices with 20%. Then follow with #insertindustryhere, followed by calling everyone Comrade.

Why not start with the government monopoly on taxation?

I bet more people spend money on taxes like vat, income taxes and fuel levies than they do on a R50 data bundle.

or better yet, mandatory pricing for the taxi industry. R5 for a trip no matter the distance.

More handout generation, sir

“Vodacom and MTN must independently reach agreement with the Commission within two months on a reduction in the headline prices of all sub-500MB 30-day prepaid data bundles to reflect the same cost per MB as the 500MB 30-day bundle, or cost-based differences where such cost differences have been quantified, as well as the cessation of partitioning strategies that contribute to anti-poor pricing and/or inferior service outcomes.”
This is the easiest thing in the world for Vodascum and eMTpyN to implement.
Simply cease to offer any data bundle below 500 MB. Regulate prices = shortages of product.

Wether or not this is going to happen, is anyone's guess.

Good move - we have been exploited by these greedy FAT CATS for too long - they are able to offer lower prices to countries run by dictators on the African continent, but not their mother country... But here's the kicker - this will not happen - ANC fat b@stards have shares in these companies...

One might not have a lot of sympathy for the network operators, but nothing in life has a zero cost associated with it. Magical thinking from the government is on display here.

I agree.

Forcing a company to provide something for free will automatically cause a deterioration in service quality. It works in their favour that everybody gets 50MB free but nobody can actually use this.

Also -- how about forcing government to release the spectrum needed to take this all forward?

I think you're not quite understanding. They're saying that data should be affordable to the masses and that if the masses are consuming data regularly in tiny quantities due to their economic circumstances they should at least pay the same price per MB as if a 500mb bundle was purchased. The operators have been gouging the low end of the market for years.
