When your guys came to do tests last week they were downloading at speeds of over 100 K Bytes per second (way over 384 K bits per second) from smtp.vodacom.co.za to my house. Saw this with my own eyes. They said that 384 Kbps is the quality of service and that the cell will burst when there is capacity available.

I was a bit stunned by this and asked them to confirm this info which they did.

Something to do with the cell "breathing" (expanding it's range by increasing transmission power), they explained.

Not sure I understood completely, can you confirm/explain?

At that point in time we had the acceleration engines in place, so that would explain the higher than 384 throughputs. Currently these are turned off, thus my surprise at your speeds. But notice, before and after tests were not so good.

Cell Breathing will affect throughput but can only drop it from 384. In any case this is how I understand it, will check up to make 100% sure.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 206.717 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 19.7 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 2.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Is this good or bad?

Only if you're on a 33Kb/s modem....

jbad, where are you testing from?

Also, can you guys with this low throughput please give me your IP address? Do a 'ipconfig /all'.

Also, please be aware the network will be down for the next few minutes.

I'm back up again and can still test at 350Kb/s.

Moreleta / Pta guys; can you check if you're on 3G (Blue) or GPRS (Green)?

The speeds you're reporting are GPRS-like and I've just received some reports on 3G sites down in Pretoria. These problems are unrelated to the other issues we saw the last two days and looks like specific transmission issues, but I'm still awaiting feedback.

Probably just the normal 'Pretoria shutting down at 10pm' ! :D

Will feed back asap on this.

GPRS at Riviera 3. I was now disconnected twice in the last five minutes. :(

Seems the reboot worked:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 10.926 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 373.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 45.8 (kiloBytes/second)

Hoop this last!!

Eventually got back on 3G this morning. Vanderbijlpark CBD BTS:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 13.36 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 305.4 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 37.4 (kiloBytes/second)

I left my connection open for most of last night. Had a disconnect at some point, but my total uptime since the problems were resolved yesterday has been AT LEAST six hours without a disconnect! Now that's pretty cool.

Results:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 13.279 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 307.3 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 37.7 (kiloBytes/second)

Everything seems stable now, which is just how I like it...

Cape town area:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 11.787 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 346.1 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 42.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Nice :) thanks V3G for admitting and then resolving the problem.
When there is major network upgrades, it would be nice to get a "heads up" before things go down, I realise it probably was not an expected delay, but getting a heads up would make things so much easier and simpler for planning this side.

ant101, as much as I would like to take credit for resolving the problem, it was the engineering guys who did not sleep for two days. As in most companies, it's often the engineers who are the unsung heroes! I'm just the messenger.

Although this problem happened during major network upgrades, it turns out that the root problem was a periodic software refresh (a bit like getting new virus definitions every day) that caused the biggest pain.

Upgrades are normally planned extremely well to ensure no or little downtime.

Vodacom will release a full explanation sometime today to myADSL.

Now this I like ...

A major corporation understanding the fact that myADSL is a very powerful community, fighting to better the situation in SA.
Well, I guess we already know this from v3g's involvement on this forum.

Thumbs up!

My Speedtest from Boksburg:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 38.031 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 107.3 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 13.1 (kiloBytes/second)

IMO it is v3g's openness & honesty about the existence of the problem [acknowledgement] that sets Vodacom apart from a few other wireless internet service providers [who will remain nameless] ;)

Please please pretty please ic, can I name them? :D

Test from Centurion,PTA

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:
