Vodacom Network Problems

It's looking better, isn't it?

My download speed is looking good. Disconnects are less.

*** Now just to sort out the uploads ... *** (2 KBps vs 8)

How is it working for you?

PS: Whatever they did with the recent drama definately has had an effect on my connection in Melkbos. I hate to say "told you so" ...

Yep, As we speak I've been getting download speeds of 60.8 Kbps on GPRS. On Wednesday I was looking at Bps. I didn't really notice the upload speeds. If Vodacom can keep this up it then I am happy to have fired and survived Telkom.

biometrics, how are you testing the uploads? I assume you're doing an FTP somewhere? If so, if you can give me the upload details I can see what I'm getting.

I agree with you it is looking much better. Since 11PM Wednesday when the network was down for a few minutes, I've not lost my connection once, currently at 47 hours, 46 minutes. I run the Telkom tests every few hours and consistently get 350-370Kb/s.

Muuuch better now
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

* Download time: 14.203 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 287.3 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 35.2 (kiloBytes/second)

I have been now connected for 24 hours without being disconnected - Thanks to V3G

Just did a telkom speedtest and got the following:

* Download time: 10.953 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 372.5 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 45.6 (kiloBytes/second)

Very impressed to say the least.

I'm getting consistent 55-62Kb/s upload and 350-370Kb/s download speeds, from an international site.

Been up now for 73 hours. Not a single drop yet.

same here v3g. Its flying tonight. Although I am noticing some latency with DNS resolution again...

A few points:

1) Do you get the DNS latency on 'new' (i,e, uncached) URLs?
2) Once you've done one DNS lookup are subsequent (done within 30s) lookups faster?
3) If you keep data flowing (by doing a ping -t, for example), how fast is the DNS resolve?

I've found (testing for a few weeks now, nonstop) an average DNS response time of around 300ms, IF your connection is active, i.e. there is some sort of data flowing.

I'll post a more complete description on how this works. It's actually a characteristic of the UMTS network, and affects all 'first' packets, but due to the nature of the Windows DNS stack, is often seen as a DNS problem.

hehehehehehe. V3G, I dont know whether to laugh at you or shout at you :D
Of course I have kept my connection active with a continuos ping!! I understand EXACTLY how UMTS and GSM data connections work!
Back on topic - cached and new queries yield the same result. I have installed a local DNS server on my home network now, and pointed it to SAIX for DNS forwarding (196.25.1.9). It seems to have helped a lot, although its not first prize!
Of course, by tomorrow morning, this problem will have gone away, eh? ;)
Cheers~

Seems if the weels has fallen of again:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 326.83 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 12.5 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 1.5 (kiloBytes/second)

BBSA, just saw you did post your speed tests here. You're chasing me all over the show by posting on the same topic in different threads! :D

These speeds are just plain ridiculous! I'll get onto it now. Moreleta, right?

You're the last one I'd try to teach how to suck eggs! :)

We've got 4 DNS servers on the network, at IS they're: 168.210.2.2 and 196.14.239.2 and at SAIX: 196.25.255.3 and 196.25.255.34.

I've been doing a DNS lookup to all 4 these servers for a week now (the IS ones for a month or two) and, as long as I keep my connection active, I get a 300-400ms response from all of them. If I allow my connection to go into idle mode, the first resolve will take up to 4 seconds.

I see a 10 minute hole in my DNS response graphs for midnight last night, does this fit or did you see it before then? After 3am this morning the IS servers did seem to struggle. Currently, all's well on my side.

Hey V3G - yes, the timing does fit in with when I was having a problem. I also typically get a 300 - 400ms response on DNS - but of late its become inconsistent. The problem is with the IS servers. I have logged the call on the IS helpdesk...

BBSA, can you PM me your physical address. I know you did send it before but I'm not near my system.

I just got results in the high 300's from people close to you, but probably not on the same tower.

Looks like it is fine now:

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 10.375 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 393.3 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 48.2 (kiloBytes/second)

But I need more stability :mad:

Thanks V3G, seems you have not lost your magic yet :D

It is great to work on 3G - I am at one of my clients in Woodmead - I cannot wait for 3Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 9.573 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 426.2 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 52.2 (kiloBytes/second)
G in Riviera at the end of the month.

Can someone please help I dont know how to interpret these results

Download time: 0.161 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 25341.6 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 3105.6 (kiloBytes/second)

jbad did you hold in CTRL before refreshing the web page? If not then this is why you get this incredible speed, as teh web browser is refreshing the file from the cache.

Thanks SoftDev I recovered from my shock - I am back to normal speeds :D
