Can someone please help I dont know how to interpret these results

Download time: 0.161 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 25341.6 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 3105.6 (kiloBytes/second)

These speeds are correct.

jbad happens to be in the test cell of the new WiMax-compliant system we're testing that will work on the current data cards. Initial speed is limited to 25Mb/s (as seen by jbad) but this will go up to 75Mb/s before year end.

....and we beat the All Blacks on Saturday. :D

We decided to skip HSDPA and go straight to WiMax...

You do know I'm joking, right? :)

You were probably to busy, as you always are, to watch the game on Saturday. :)

jbad, got caught by the caching that, so often, messes up testing.

V3g talking about wimax when will we be getting it in SA - I know of a company that is testing to role it out, should I believe them :D

The kit is becoming available and test networks are up and running. We've had our test WiMax network up quite a few months ago.

But it's still early days to get commercial networks out but I won't be surprised if there are early adopters out there.

V3g tell me when are you testing Wimax again, I must experience it again - it was great to experience the future - but reality back in Pretoria Riviera, my speeds are not bad for GPRS.

Download time: 53.557 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 76.2 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 9.3 (kiloBytes/second)

What is coding scheme 4 on GPRS - whatever, It is atleast better than bad :D

Download time: 58.033 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 70.3 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 8.6 (kiloBytes/second)

GPRS?, phew, thought you're posting the standard Pretoria 3G speed :)

You're seeing Coding Scheme 4 on GPRS.

ROFL, I just kicked my desk - it's how I kick myself when I've been really doff! :D

Am I missing something - but I see very little people complaining re. Pretoria bandwith speeds, I presume something is going not to bad :confused:
Wait until bad turn good, then we are going to rock SA - show the world Africa is not so bad

The Coding Scheme (CS) on GPRS (1 to 4) is a function on how much data can be transmitted on one 'channel' or 'timeslot'. The higher the coding scheme, the more data is encoded but with less error correction.

CS1: 8.4 Kb/s
CS2: 11.2 Kb/s
CS3: 14.8 Kb/s
CS4: 17.6 Kb/s

So if you get 4 timeslots on CS4, your max. throughput would be 17.6*4 = 70Kb/s.

3G Speed Test

Just did a Telkom speed test and got the following results:

* Download time: 11.562 seconds
* Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
* Estimated line speed: 352.9 (kilobits/second)
* Estimated line speed: 43.2 (kiloBytes/second)

Not bad with only 1-2 bar signal strength according to the dash - but considering the area is covered by 3G, should the reception not be better?

Still get the odd disconnect, and oddly enough even with a 3G Only profile in use - it still switches itself over to GPRS when in the area that I'm in at present?

Well at least the connection is stable now, let's hope it stays that way... Thanks to all concerned at VodaCom :)

Spoke Too Soon

I spoke too soon, not long after my previous post, the connection went dead (it didn't disconnect) and then nothing...

Disconnected, and tried reconnecting several times with no luck. It usually connects in 6-8 seconds, but even after 45-60 seconds it's still connecting?

I've given up in the meantime, but this is something strange that only happens to me in one particular area, and this was both before and after the area was covered by the 3G network?

The Vodacom guys have been here in the past and it baffles them too? Was pretty stable for a while, but since the problems of last week, it seems to have returned? Today is very bad, with 10 minutes being the longest I've been able to stay online before loosing "connectivity" - very weird

Anyone else out there had the same, or similar problem(s)? Or am I the only lucky one?

Just had some reports of MMS failing, not to sure if it's related, probably not.

Since the work done last week, my connection is so stable I have to break it with a rock...Since Wednesday last week, I've had ONE disconnect. Just got 350Kb/s from an INTERNATIONAL site!

So , the transmission and core networks seems stable.

If you can PM me your physical address, I can put you in contact with the local guys again.
