Go check out the TCP stalling WhatsApp and other push services thread in the Cell C section. Android on Cell C sucks at the moment if you know how push services are actually supposed to work.

I think he meant that you should only buy the phone through CellC, then flick the CellC sim in the bin and insert your Vodacom sim. :)

lolz.

SLY!

Yeah, but it is starting to cheese me off. I phoned Vodacom Retentions the other day to find out if the pay-in has dropped for the Galaxy S2 on a Talk 75s contract, but it's still R4159!!

I told them I don't want to buy Vodacom, I just want a Galaxy S2, cos it works with my DSTV Drifta. *sniff*

The Talk 75 is a rather small package meneer. You aint gonna get snazy phone on it without som sort of pay in. The DST Drifta works with any Android phone does it not? Why does it have to be the Galaxy S2?

Yeah....what the hell...you want the best phone in the world on a relatively entry level contract and you're surprised you have to pay 4K in? Seriously?

That's like being angry you can't buy a Ferrari on a R100 per month payment plan....

Just look at the original SGS that STILL has 2.5K pay-in and it's like a year old and a bit old....untill they suggest you can take two SGSs on this contract you can forget not having a huge pay-in on a SGS2. So errr...try back 2 years from now?

By the way OC you don't happen to work in either the Gateway or Pav Vodashop do you?

I dont work in a shop. I work in my companies headoffice. We own a bunch of stores. I deal with corporate clients mostly. :)

Ah ok. Was wondering if we might end up meeting when me and my family go for our upgrades next week but it seems not.
I'm pressed though since you really know your stuff, I don't get how sometimes the people working at these shops don't care about phones that much. You'd think it would be a requirement to be into phones.

So explain to me then how is it possible to get a Galaxy S2 with 100 anytime minutes for R280 a month from CellC - with NO pay-in.

I dare you.

Yeah lol. I've been to both Cellucity and Vodashop. And the Cellucity guy first had to google it when I asked him something about one of the phones and he eventually found it on GSMArena and then when we left disasstisfied that they didn't have the phone and headed over to the Gateway Vodashop every single one of those reps basically lived on GSMArena (the rep we went to had his station at the back of the shop and as we walked past the other stations they were all displaying GSMArena on their screens).

Simple, they know their service is inferior so they have to try much harder to get your business and grant you a much greater discount on the all the phones.

I admit Vodacom is on the pricey side, but their service is so much better usually that it doesn't make sense to move elsewhere.

At least that's the way I feel. And I'm in a similar though much more sensible situation compared to you where I want to get the HTC ChaCha on Talk75 but it has an 880 Pay-in whereas on MTN I could get it for R79 per month for free on a contract with R50 airtime every month and 10MB data for the first 6 months and 25 free SMSs (I assume every month) but that's still no reason to go yellow.

Gsmarena is a god send to us poor Vodacom underlings :). You guys might not think so...but Vodacom does stock a lot of phones that we have to know about. The only way it is possible to advise a client on all these phones is to look it up on gsmarena. It might appear as we dont know what we are doing because we are using gsmarena...but it is simply humanly impossible to be a expert on each and every phone that we have on the market.

That's the hard bit to swallow. CellC is not so inferior anymore, while Vodacom chooses to stay as expensive as possible.

Great way to attract more customers.....or maybe they should put a sign on their Vodashop windows, saying "No poor people allowed here"?

GSMArena is very good, but if I want to know what people think of a phone, I use the customer reviews on amazon.com & amazon.co.uk - very interesting and a great tool.

If you really want to get the SGS2 cheap just buy it on Expansys or something like that and then stick in a prepaid non-contract card.

GSMArena is very good, but if I want to know what people think of a phone, I use the customer reviews on amazon.com & amazon.co.uk - very interesting and a great tool.

I use GSMArena to determine the grunt of all the phones. Then I try and determine what the strongest phone is I can get for close to free or with relatively small pay-in on my contract (a Talk240) and then I check professional reviews to find out whether the phone is any good or whether it has any glaring problems which I may or may not ignore depending on my wants. And then lastly I check XDA-Developers to see how the unofficial support is for the phone just in case.

No need to check what the everyday dude who got the phone thinks about it since the specs do more than enough talking on their own. Back in the day yeah one would have needed to check cuz they were all weak yet some managed to run this or that better than others and they all had their odd quirks. With droids however they're much more like computers since android is more like a standardised OS which makes the grunt underneath the OS matter most and once that's up to scratch the phone is good regardless of what some silly american thinks.
Some dude saying wow the SGS2 is awesome on some site doesn't help me when the hardware already more than tells me that.

If you can't decide between two phones with similar grunt then it comes down to which is older since the older is likely to have less support and which brand name you trust more to give you a reliable phone (something the dude who commented on amazon who popped on to say how awesome it is after he turned it on for the first time can't tell you). Then after that a quick check to see which has better unofficial support just to make sure you're not setting yourself up for a dead end and done and you're done and know which phone you want to get.

By the way OC I've been wondering why are the Desire HD and Desire S not on the list? Do they count as discontinued already?
