Download Speed: 2034 kbps (254.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 347 kbps (43.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Does this confirm that I good to get 3.5G only when the traffic is not too high?

Probably. The 2034 does seem to indicate you were on 3.6 so I think we can assume your modem is at least OK for 3.6. I'm still waiting for the manufacturers to reply to me on 7.2.

I think a few more tests can fully confirm.

(Try it when your at Oliver Tambo again. I've seen some good results there before.)

Actually, let me clarify. You'll always get 3.6 on the radio link, if your device is 3.6 capable. But you might see lower end-to-end throughput if there are backhaul limitations.

I've been able to get over 1Mbps with my Nokia N95 over USB, even though it only reports a connection speed of 460.8kbps.

I've set my port settings to the MAX - 921600 bps - and also changed my TCP Window Size settings to 64K for support of 3.6 and soon 7.2. No difference in speed.

Only get between 800-900kbps while connecting via the USB cable. But if I'm on the phone and I download via FTP, I get around 1.3 to 1.4mbps.

I've been provisioned for 3.6.

I'm starting to think it's the actual phone that's limiting the speed of the USB 2.0 connection. I mean even though it's USB 2.0...it's been limited. As stated in these reviews:-

N95 - 900-950 Kb/s - http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n95-music-en.shtml

N95 8GB - 600-650 Kb/s - http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n95-8gb-en.shtml#8

N82 - 600-650 Kb/s - http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n82-en.shtml#9

I've updated my Nokia PC Suite to the latest version as well.

I wonder if Nokia can bring out a firmware fix for this connection speed limit?

Otherwise people who want to use their phones as a modem...sorry for you...no 3.6 for you, even though you have a 3.6 capable device.

Any thoughts.....

I'm confident that my device is working normally and making use of the 3.6G when the traffic permits.

For those who are getting lower than normal speeds on their E220's with 3.6 enable, can you just confirm which version of VMCLite are you using?

Yes, looks like it.

Will be interesting to see how it performs on 7.2.....;)

V3G, did you know about This??

I just found it now. Could it possibly be related to the lower than average speeds some forumites are getting?

No, I did not, thanks for pointing it out. But then, YOU'RE the E220 expert, not me ;)

This looks compelling enough that I think we should ask a few forumites who are getting crappy speeds and are on Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite software (versions 2.1.6 and 2.2.2 only) to download and test.

Can you also test?

Strange that they finger the dash and not the firmware. You'd expect the firmware to be managing the actual data throughput.

I'll check with the clever guys back home.

I havent visited the site in a while, and i just saw that when i opened the page. I didnt even know about it.

It cant test coz i'm using version 3.0.3 and i get the average of 2.2Mbps. Unless i reflash it with version 2.2.2.1 and do the tests.

Ja i also thought that, but maybe theres some bug in the dash that they discovered? Maybe with the Dashboard upgrade they inlcude some fixes like with a firwmware upgrade, that could possibly be why they would point out the dash.

The dash is the culprit because its not setting the APN:
We have identified a problem with the Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite software (versions 2.1.6 and 2.2.2 only) that could cause performance problems in some situations. To find out which version of software you are currently running, click Help on the main screen and select About. This problem will potentially affect only the versions above.

Symptoms of the problem are that you experience slower than expected performance of your device, and you may see occasional DNS error messages when accessing the internet. This is caused by a missing or incorrect internet Access Point Name (APN).

Thats coz the dash is set to Automatic APN Selection.

Its the same as with version 3, and i've had no problems, so the question is which APN is it setting?

And was that "bug" fixed with version 3?

Saw that but then you won't get any data at all. So it might cause "DNS errors" but not low throughput.

They claim poor performance though.

Morkhans and I did some speed tests on MTN & Vodacom around Cape Town last night, head on over to the MTN Forum to see the results.

Is there any chance a Hauwei Junkie like myself can get one of those E272's to test... :D
