In that case rather wait the extra 4 days and see what happens - if anything...

That's the plan, its a new complex so there aren't any physical lines at all, that's their excuse for taking so long but we'll see. If I could get decent 3G coverage I'd probably have just given up on them by now but I'm just out of range for that.

I'm being a tad nasty anyway ;)

Just for the users here, GET A DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR ! Not one person has actually suggested to me until last night. I downloaded a file at 20:12 and got 60kb/sec. I installed the accelerator and got 180kb/sec .... quickest my 3G has been at.

I tried downloading something else today ... 260kb/sec ... my 3G has new life ;) In addition I got a video accelerator. I can now play a 6 minute clip in youtube without buffering. I've never been able to do this.

Get it at www.speedbit.com and let me know the results ;)

Just for the record, speedtest.net shows 1784Kbps download to Cape Town node. Since I'm not on 3.6 this is pretty close to 100%. And I'm in Mooinooi, northwest province. Not bad! (I'm not sure where the 3G signal is coming from ... I don't think it's this town ... how do you find out?)

If you use FF get DownThemAll. integrates right into the browser, even easier. ;)

So not much difference between the 2 profiles yet.

Uplink will be close as the network won't be loaded in the up direction.

Downlink is a pure function of how much backhaul is available at the specific tower and obviously how congested the links are.

At OR Tambo, the other day, I got 2900 down which is not too bad for a busy site. But obviously there was enough capacity available there.

I was never getting close to these speeds before and they are higher than expected for the 1.8 profile.

Conclusions:
  • The tower has had 3.6 turned on so I get the faster speeds. It wasnt on for the so-called test period.
  • My profile has not been changed and Im still on 3.6.

If you use a 3.6 device on a 1.8 profile you'll see speeds like this, often exceeding the 1.8 limit for short bursts. While a 1.8 device is limited in hardware a 3.6 device, when on a 1.8 profile, is limited in software so it'll achieve 100% without problem.

Q: how do you know which HSDPA profile your SIM Cards are on?

Presumably all of the trial HSDPA 3.6 profiles must have been reset to HSDPA 1.8 profiles by now, so unless one has subscribed to HSDPA 3.6 @ ZAR50/month, or one's SIM Card's profile has not yet been reverted to HSDPA 1.8, one's SIM Card should be using the HSDPA 1.8 profile...

If anyone is unsure, try using [searchforum]MDMA +ginggs[/searchforum], which displays the HSPA uplink & downlink profile obtained from the HSPA network...

My understanding is that they're doing the roll-back slowly, so some peeps might still see 2M+ speeds for a few days, probably till into this week.

Ok, was just wondering - bcos the HSDPA 1.8 profile limit is a s/w limit and prior to the HSDPA 3.6 trial it was also possible to get peak speeds of slightly higher than 1.8 - at least until the s/w limit kicked in on a data transfer.

Yes, will be the same again.

I did another test:

Download Speed: 140 kbps (17.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 320 kbps (40 KB/sec transfer rate)

Worse than before!

1 hour later:

Download Speed: 144 kbps (18 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 326 kbps (40.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Something is definitely wrong here. Will check again tomorrow at work.
