Hi,

I need to use VNC server to allow remote connections to my desktop on port 5900 via Vodacom 3G using my iPhone's hotspot.

I've applied for the Unrestricted APN from Vodacom and they have activated the service for me. On the myvodacom website -> My Vodacom -> Manage Services I can see that the Unrestricted option is active.

I've received the following email from Vodacom:

"Please note that the unrestricted APN has been activated on your line as per your request. You will now have to create a new connection profile where the APN name is unrestricted."

I'm not too sure on what to set my iPhone APN settings to to allow for incoming connections on port 5900. I've set both the APN Cellular Data and Personal Hotspon APN names to all these values unrestricted / Unrestricted / unrestricted.vodacom.za AND I've made sure my firewall on my mac is not blocking incoming connections on port 5900. All the setting changes above were followed by a reboot of the phone.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get the unrestricted APN settings configured to allow for incoming connections?

Ok. So Vodacom confirmed that the APN is unrestricted and that is should allow all incoming connections. They recommended that I contact Apple to determine if there are any limitations there.

After a quick chat with Apple I got the following response:

"As it turns out, the hotspot for the iPhone doesn’t include advanced features like port forwarding so I don’t believe this will work."

Thought I'd post this for anyone looking for a solution for this sometime in the future. Looks like the only way around this is to get a 3G dongle that would allow advanced features like port forwarding.

Of course it won't work if above is true. I suspected it, see my previous post.
