Hey

Let me start with saying how fantastic this idea and service is.
Now the following is more directed towards Vodacom 3G since he is invloved with Vodacom directly, so here it goes.

I noticed BBC World is FREE on Vlive until February 28th 2006, now here is where my questions come in

1) How much would the service like this cost? Obviosuly you may not have the exact price, but what is the range?

2) Channels!!! BBC World as a educated guess was simply put there for free so that Vodacom could test (among some things) the service and how well it works, plus user feedback. Now that will be charged for after Feb 2006, will a service like Sky News, CNN, M-Net, SABC 1,2,3 and E-TV also be made available at a subscription?

Thank you in advance for your time in answering the above

Ooh, that would be great. If I leave work too late, and I can't make it to watch CSI, I can watch it on my cell while driving :D

EDIT: But seriously, how much would forumites be willing to fork out for such a service?
I think if it would be priced just below that for renting a dvd for instance, I'd be willing. Say, R10 per hour?

lol, now watch the Traffic department issue a new law

"No Watching TV while Driving"

lol, that would be rather interesting

Taxi Drivers will definately break the rule :D

I really do hope that other channels are released soon :) I enjoy BBC as it is and other channel's would be great

I agree, but mainly for MTV. Then maybe a connection to the cars ICE would be cool.

I think the BBC service is linked to the agreement with Vodafone and not DSTV. As for paying for the service - not a chance, I would not go for it.
/me wears glasses and thu screen is tooo small to have to pay to watch it!!

I would say R35 for 1 channel is reasonable, then add R10-20 per other channel that is provided. Remebering that this is cellular technology and not a TV. Quality of image is not very good so that is why I recommend the above rates

Edited : These rates above would be a monthly fee, obvioslty stuff like Movie Magic or M-Net might be slightly different, but M-TV, CNN, BBC etc Discover Channel stuff like that can easily fall in a per month price bracket.

But surely you can use a magnifying glass?

LOL - ...could then pawn my 74cm TV then and get some money to pay for more broadband access:)

When HSPDA or whatever its called comes out, they can up the resolution on the feed. Then if you have a phone with tv out, you can watch on your pc! Then hook up your pc to a plasma screen and you've got home theatre via your cell phone?

I really hope Telkom does not cap Vodacom's links between the towers with all the plasma tv quality streaming you guys are planning... lol

Dstv on your cell

I was one of the lucky few chosen for a free Nokia 7710 with a special streamer to watch Dstv on your cell... It does not use 3g but a new technology call DVB H (Digital Video broadcasting handheld)... It is quite cool can only get signal in Randburg and Sandton for now but will be the whole of Johannesburg on the 1st of November... Consist of 14 channels and some Dmx music channels too... For more info check http://www.mobiletv.nokia.com/

Gazza same here.. cant wait till the 1st November.. doesnt work in alot of places i tend to be.. nice phn aswell

Vodacom3G you got any answers yet?

Saw some info that indicates there will be more channels soon and some pricing as well.

The guys are still in negotiations with the content providers so won't make any public statements yet, but your speculation on channels seems close, pricing; not to sure :)

This is exciting news.

But I am concerned about bandwidth. Currently each BBC World watcher gets his own stream, right? So with more channels, wouldn't it eat all the bandwidth?
Shouldn't there be fixed streams that we just sort of "tune into?"
