Vodacom vs MTN 3G HSDPA

I have recently obtained the Vodacom 3G data card (I also have a MTN similar card "Fastlink") and Im impressed with the speed when comparing to MTN. Its so fast that I have been trying to reduce it so that my partner at home does not use all the data allowed for the month. I tried to manually change the setting to GPRS but its slower than my telkom land line. Typical speeds I get in the Westville area are: Vodacom GPRS - 10 to 20kbps, Telkom - 25 to 35kbps, MTN - 100 to 200kbps and Vodacom - 600 to 800kbps. If you disable virus scan programs you will should see these numbers jump up by about 30 to 50% more. Can anyone suggest how I can reduce the Vodacom data card speed to about 200kbps?
The Vodacom card was my choice because 1) I think the Vodashops are 100% better than MTN. The staff at MTN dont have any clue about anything. 2) The info available on both webs was poor however prices quoted were cheaper for Vodacom ie you save about R2000 not purchasing the data card and there is no connection fees 3) Vodacom through various webs are quoted faster.
I now have an MTN data card in my laptop and the Vodacom card in my desktop. For a long time I could not get neither MTN or Voda nor mweb to explain how I could use a 3G data card in my desktop. All said I needed to spend about R2000 for a router and R2000 for a data card. None of this is true. I used logic and contacted a friend, read a few tech mags and then went off to purchase PCI card for R300 (thru a wholesaler not your local PC shop) and that all that is needed.
So finally after 2 or 3 years of trying to get DSL thru Telkom without any luck I tried to get a wireless internet setup thru SAOL for about a year, with no luck. Then my work (also based in Westville) over the last 6 months set my laptop up with a Telkom DSL and the MTN 3G HSDPA. The Telkom DSL line has been down at least once per week. The MTN card is realiable but does not go any faster than DSL. So it got me thinking and after doing a serious cost analysis with MTN and Vodacom. Vodacom won by miles and miles of kbps (to many for the wife!!) and a massive cost saving!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To limit speed get voda to put you on a 3G profile not a HSDPA profile why you want to do this I have no clue but thats your solution.

Switching to a 3G profile (by changing your contract) will limit you to 384Kb/s, but I'm not sure this is the most elegant solution. You might want to get full HSDPA speeds at some point.

Try netlimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com), it will allow you to throttle each application to whatever speed you require.

I will try the netlimiter web site and tell u how it goes!!! The idea is not to totally illiminate HSDPA, its a tool to reduce speed for those (my wife!!) that do not know what the internet is capable of doing. Trust me she could wipe out my data bundle in a couple of days. At about 100kbps she will be more than happy!!! For the last 10 years with Telkom line internet we have been happy with 10 to 30kbps but it was costing me about R1000 to R2000 for the time connected. I think my wife communicates more with the internet than me.
Could Vodacom tell me why u have to "check" ur data card before you unlock it. What does this all mean cause its quotes on all ur postings??

Not all data cards were locked in the first place, and we had a few instances where forumites went to a Vodacare to try and get their cards 'unlocked' and they weren't locked in the first place!

So my sig merely suggests to first test your card with a non-Vodacom sim, before you go to the effort of taking it in to be unlocked. Might not be locked at all.

Makes sense?

Thanks for the unlock card story. I just got worried about something I had not read about in the instructions.
The netlimiter site is a good one. Ive downloaded the monitor ver and it seems to be okay. I just wish it had a smaller tool bar look so that I can see the speed at all times. I will consider buying the limiter ver once Ive tried the trial ver. This program should work for my data limiting requirements.

Try dumeter for constant eye on speeds. It can float anywhere on the desktop.
