I think that modem is the Huawei E270 which supports HSDPA at 7.2Mbps and HSUPA at 2Mbps. It does seem to cost around 49GBP more than the E220 though. The E220 is free on the same monthly 25GBP package (see below). Vodafone is currently rolling out 7.2Mbps HSDPA in the UK.

It would appear that the E220 can support HSDPA at 7.2Mbps but an upload speed of only 384kbps. Most if not all of the 3G HSDPA/HSUPA cards are based on Qualcomm chipsets -MSM6250 (3G such as Novatel U630), MSM6275 (1.8Mbps HSDPA such as Novatel U740), MSM6280 (7.2Mbps HSDPA such as Huawei E220) or MSM7200 (7.2Mbps HSDPA 2Mbps HSUPA such as Huawei E270). Mobilkom in Austria has some firmware on their website for the E220 which apparently supports HSDPA speeds of 7.2Mbps (not HSUPA speeds it would seem though). The 7.2Mbps ready cards like the Option GT Max etc. would appear to be based on the MSM6280 chipset and only support the higher downlink speeds but not HSUPA type uplink speeds. Unfortunately use of the higher uplink speeds which will soon be available worldwide will require the purchase of one of the latest MSM7200 based cards.

Great, so it would be foolish to spend good money on old technology when the upgrade path is there. Especially since it is cheap in the UK. the £49 figure is for contract users, but you can buy it prepaid for around £170. That's still reasonable compared to E220 price here!!

I've been informed that the E220 has already been upgraded to 3.6 from 1.8, & therefore does not have space for further improvements.

@Skeptik: It sounds as though you are still optimistic about a quick upgrade to 7.2Mbps! This might be a long way off as we are still on 1.8Mbps and the 3.6Mbps upgrade is still in the pipeline. Our ADSL speeds are also well below those available internationally. You are correct though about the E220 being obsolete.

If you are interested in purchasing an E270 locally this company may be able to help. They also supply the GlobeSurfer ICON and various other brands of HSDPA cards.

@Pitbull: Any idea of the prepaid/contract offers for the E270 in case anybody is interested?

Pitbull, DO NOT tell me you're already surfing the net at 7.2Mbps!

I'm sure MTN is testing it on a 'private' 7.2Mbps network... ;)

Damn I wish I'd be so lucky....

I know that some guys are on 3.6Mbps (Testing OFC) - But the E270 is already at the dealerships AFAIK. As it is indicated on the new price lists

It's the 15th today.

Do you have an update on the new HUWAI E270.

I tried the MTN shop in Canal Walk. Sadly they hadn't a clue and told me to try the MTN shop outside the centre near some BP garage. I didn't have time to go exploring though, so I can't help wondering why MTN shops are always so clueless??

Bump ...
It looks like the E270 hasn't made it onto the MTN dealer lists yet.
