It would help if they tell you if it was already standard on your car or not. This is on their website:

Supplied as standard for most of our new vehicles and for many Volkswagens from 2008 onwards.

I checked a few models and they just say it is compatible or not. Do you have to go to a dealer first to find out if it came with your car? Or just install the app and see if it picks up the car?

I'm really excited by this. Anybody have a clue what it will cost in South Africa?

The best part is the battery level indicator ... as I've already reported on here, lockdown has been nailing my battery.

Pricing for the dataplug would be interesting.
If it's cheap enough, I'd be quite quick to get it.

Data plugs will be offered as standard on Volkswagen models from the Polo Comfortline and above, as from July 2020, and will be available as optional items for older Volkswagen models dating back as far as 2008, but excluding the previous generation Polo Vivo.

You will have to buy the dataplug and install it in the diagnostic port just under the steering wheel, once plugged in you connect to it via Bluetooth. It is literally plug and play.

It is literally plug and plug, you buy it from the parts department, open the box and plug it in.
Workshop doesn't need to do anything.

After install, download the app from the play store, activate bluetooth and link the two together.

Just don't be surprised, not many of the guys are clued up about it yet.
I have been playing with it now for a good 6 months already.

If they give you confused eyes, then give them the part number 5GV.051.629L

First screenshot (which confirms my battery is a bit flat rofl ... apparently normal operating voltage is 14 to 16V):

So we know it works :) Any questions you'd like me to answer?

looks quite cool,
now all you need is remote start and remote preheat,,
so you get into your car and its already nice and toasty.

knowing VAG it will be an optional extra,

Yeah I should just say here, if you want one you gotta get it now. Apparently they're just arrived at dealerships, and there aren't many. Although some lucky car buyers got theirs for free with their purchase ... I think it's for all cars purchased from July as I recall.
