Volkswagen Continues SUV Offensive

Volkswagen is planning yet another Polo-based SUV. Here's what we know so far.

The original story was reported by Wards Auto, where Volkswagen announced it will be building a third model in the Polo family at the Group's facility in northern Spain. As it stands, this facility currently assembles Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen T-Cross models. Since the plant came on line back in 1984, over 272 000 vehicles have been assembled and it'll churn out around 1 410 cars every day.

As for the newcomer, Volkswagen is claiming the third model will be a "sporty urban CUV (crossover) and will have hybrid and electric versions." While that detail may not seem like much, we can speculate given the platform engineering that takes place. Also, if we consider Volkswagen's concepts from the past few years, we get a clearer picture.

^^^^ Another shot fired at the Ford EcoSport.

When is Toyota going to get into the game ? The C-HR is not really cutting it as a compact anything. Something like the old 3-door RAV4 to take on this new VW.

New Volkswagen T-Cross: SA options list (with pricing) revealed

Volkswagen South Africa recently announced pricing for the initial derivatives in its upcoming T-Cross range. And now we’ve come across a list of optional extras for the fresh-faced crossover.

At the local launch in September 2019, the T-Cross range will comprise a 1,0 TSI Comfortline DSG variant (priced from R334 600) and a 1,0 TSI Highline DSG (starting at R365 000). Of course, we've already reported on local trim levels.

A 70 kW version of the 1,0 TSI engine (mated with a five-speed manual gearbox) will arrive in the second quarter of 2020, with the Trendline variant expected to start below R300 000. In the first quarter of 2020, meanwhile, a 1,5 TSI flagship with 110 kW (and the R-Line kit) will be available.

So, what about that options list? Well, for now it covers only two initial variants in the local line-up...

Specifying the R-Line exterior styling package (including 17-inch “Manila” alloys in the case of the Comfortline variant and 18-inch “Nevada” items for the Highline derivative) will cost you an extra R17 850, while upgrading to the Beats sound system will add R8 800.

If you want VW’s “Composition Media” system (complete with App-Connect and inductive smartphone charging) you’ll add R7 250 to the price, although note this is already standard on the Highline model. A R13 000 exterior design package (called “Energetic Orange” and including orange-accented alloys) will furthermore be offered for the Highline variant.

Hmm getting a little pricey, considering the interior isn't as nice as that in the Polo.

Volkswagen T-Cross the best small crossover SUV in 2019? - OSV

Volkswagen's considered entry into the super-mini-based SUV sector, the T-Cross, should find a ready market.

Think of a Volkswagen Polo with a more adventurous image, a slightly larger cabin and a more flexible interior. You're picturing this car, Volkswagen's smallest SUV, the T-Cross.

It's trendy, quite sophisticated and very acceptably efficient, thanks to its 1.0-litre TSI petrol and 1.6 TDI diesel engine options. And you can make it very much your own. What's not to like?

Please note that this is a comprehensive review & the video has a running time of 54:33 mins.

VW working on coupe-inspired version of T-Cross SUV - report

Another day, another new SUV or crossover niche that’s being filled by one of the mainstream car companies. This one could be quite a big seller, however...

According to the website Motor.es, Volkswagen is working on a coupe-inspired variant of its new Polo-based T-Cross and it should hit the streets - overseas at least - in 2020.

Details are scarce at this point, but the newcomer will reportedly be called the T-Cross Coupe, even though it’s not strictly a coupe, but rather a crossover vehicle with a sloping roofline and sportier C-pillar distinguishing it from the regular T-Cross.

In pricing terms it will inevitably slot between the T-Cross and the T-Roc, while the basic interior configuration and powertrains will be shared with the former.

The new Volkswagen T-Cross is coming and to create the ultimate car launch, Volkswagen’s creating the ultimate city, the ultimate urban playground: T-Cross City.

Built from the ground up, for and by you, T-Cross City will be the ultimate urban playground made up of the experiences you choose.T-Cross City initially lives online, but with enough audience interaction on the microsite, areas will open up week-by-week until it’s eventually built as an actual, real-life city for fans to explore and enjoy for free on 21 and 22 September at Montecasino’s outdoor area.
