Electric cars that require electricity from a grid that is mainly burning coal to generate electricity...maybe this is why Germany is giving us that 12 billion. To go green, since the details of the deal isn't clear at all.

Cost? This will be for the folks who already have 2-3 cars and money isnt an issue.
It'll be used to drop the kids off and go shopping at woolies or getting a coffee and providing well to do folks with bragging rights " have I shown you my new electric car?"
On the weekends the V8 will be out in full force.
Sounds great, sign me up.

Having read the article - VW has actually announced that they will be testing electric cars in SA in 2022.

Wake me, when they actually sell electric cars here.

I really don't understand all the naysayers on every article around electrical cars.

At least with an electric car I can install Solar panels at my house and charge my car. Making my totally independent of a failing State

Good luck making my our own petrol or happily paying R30 /l once the government adjust the tax on fuel to cover the shortfalls for their wasteful expenditure

These cars are good for short distance. But, once the batteries go, you are in for major expenses. In SA you will never be able to travel more than a hundred or so Kilos ever again with these vehicles. With increasing electricity prices, charging these vehicles may cause R30 p/l petrol look cheap. Once enough people are on solar, municipalities will jump at the first opportunity to levy fees for that too.

Good luck with the green future!

Not sure what world you and the ANC lives in... but here's reality:

All batteries degrade with time and use. Most EVs have a warranty for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever is earlier. An EV battery is considered at end of its life if it no longer maintains 80% of total usable capacity and has more than 5% self-discharge rate over a 24-hour period

Lol same difference. It starts off with 95% and then tapers off over 15 years. You must be smoking some pretty bad stuff.

Lol, you are only referring to current predictions. These EV car batteries have not been tested over these period of times. While manufacturers only gives a 5-8 year warranty, real life tests may still prove you wrong.

Nonetheless, if you visit EV forums you are likely to find many, many posts of people who bought the Leaf around 2012 and having to replace the batteries by 2017. If you have a couple hundred thousands of Rands laying around, you could easily do that. In fact, from many posts by EV users, it seems 5-8 years are quite common to replace batteries in real life.

There you go then.... fun times ahead.... oh, and by the way, replacement of batteries within 5-8 years are not only limited to Leaf. You should go read up on Hyundai and BMW too.
