Inaugural ‘World Car Person of the Year’ revealed…

The organisers of the World Car Awards have announced the winner of the inaugural “World Car Person of the Year” award at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Car Group’s president and chief executive officer, took the honour for making Volvo an “aspirational brand again”.

“World Car is delighted and honoured to announce that Håkan Samuelsson is the inaugural winner of the 2018 World Car Person of the Year award,” said Mike Rutherford, World Car vice chairperson.

“When deciding who should win this first-time award, we weren’t concerned about the age, nationality or job title of the man or woman concerned. We simply wanted to identify the most worthy individual in the industry,” added Rutherford.

The World Car Awards organisers described Samuelsson as someone who had “successfully integrated his relatively small company into an automotive empire based on another continent”, making reference to the Swedish brand’s Chinese owners.

At the same time, Samuelsson maintained the brand’s identity and “relative independence”, as well as “thoroughly revived” the product line-up.

“I see this award as acknowledgement of the efforts made by the entire Volvo Cars organisation in recent years,” Samuelsson said.

Big news!

Volvo set to ditch diesel … starting with the new S60

Volvo Cars has confirmed that its new S60 sedan will not be offered with a diesel engine, with the Swedish automaker expected to soon announce that it will never again launch a new vehicle with an oil-burning engine.

The move away from diesel in the upcoming S60 highlights the brand’s “commitment to a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine”, Volvo said in a statement.

The automaker had earlier announced that all new models launched from 2019 would be available as either a mild-hybrid petrol, a plug-in petrol hybrid or a battery electric vehicle.

“Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars.

“We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with petrol hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment.”

The new S60 will be initially available with a range of four-cylinder petrol engines as well as with two petrol plug-in hybrid versions. Mild-hybrid versions are expected to follow in 2019.

According to Auto Express, Volvo will soon formally announce its complete move away from diesel, with Samuelsson telling the Financial Times that “we’re not saying diesel is more dirty, but it’s more complicated and more expensive”…

Busted: the myth that Volvos have poor resale values

A somewhat flawed article. Firstly it is largely based on what Volvo SA execs say so of course they will “bust the myth”. Secondly there is a difference between resale value which what the stealerships retail pre owned cars for and trade in values which is what the stealerships pay the poor sods trading in. They buy 50-100 below book trade and sell at full book retail, so going by the price stealerships sell cars at does not fully reflect true resale value for those off loading the cars as trade ins.

Also, a big driver for resale is repair costs, parts availability and dealer/aftermarket mechanic support which is not perception but reality and unfortunately Volvo fared badly on these dimensions historically but looks to be getting better now.

Why do Volvo Cars have poor resale value in South Africa? Experts weigh in

“Volvos have poor resale values.” This is a statement often heard in South Africa. I have been hearing it a lot lately, because I’m driving a Volvo XC40.

While everyone who has had the opportunity to ride in it loves it, they often say: “It’s going to lose a lot of money on the used market.”

I must admit this was the case in the past. More that a decade ago, I owned an S40 sedan that I loved. While it served me extremely well, it did not attract interest in the used market. had to part with it for below trade value in the end. It was perhaps an early indicator that South Africans were losing interest in sedans, particularly non-German sedans, as most D-segment sedans have disappeared from the new car price list in Mzansi.

Last week, I got in touch with two industry insiders to find out more about the resale values of Volvo Cars in South Africa. Here’s what they had to say:
