Hi

I'm looking for a preowned car and someone highly recommened the Volvo S40 2.4i. I had a look around and they are dirt cheap. But besides that, the 5 cylinder sounds incredible: like half a Lambo Gallardo V10. The car comes with a full 5yr/100 000km maintenance plan as a bonus. All this for new Polo money.

Can anyone recommend Volvo for service, reliability, performance, fuel consumption etc. or is there anything I should look out for?

Damn these things are cheap!

What is the fuel economy like on these cars? How expensive are the services?

Definitely Yay! As far as i know there aren't any major hiccups with Volvo's after sales service. Not sure how expensive it is but i would imagine it's not like owning a BMW.

Nice car!

I hear fuel economy is around 10L/100 in town and about 7L/100 on the highway.

No service costs due to the maintenance plan for 100 000km.

A friend of mine recently had to do a major service, and the car's milage was just over 100 000, it cost him R7500

he has s40 2.0T

Ok thanks.

That is the the problem with any premium car - servicing and maintenance out of motorplan is very expensive. My A3 TDi service at 120 000km is usually over R11k. Thankfully i bought an extended motorplan.

Yes, that was on my shortlist. Just that I'm missing out on the 5 cylinder sound which is the main reason I'm leaning towards the Volvo.

If I had to choose between an S40 and an Accord , it's a no brainer - Honda FTW.

Resale value is the last consideration when I buy a car. After driving it for 5 years, pretty much anything is going to loose you a truckload of money. Comfort and reliability comes first.

True, Just to compare, an 2005 Audi A3 goes for about R130k while a 2005 Volvo gets about R110k. Not terribly different considering the Volvo was about R15k cheaper to buy in the first place.

I wouldnt have a problem with a Volvo. You say resale value doesnt bother you, that actually might be the only bother. Very safe.
Only strange bit is that volvos are more of a cruising car, and you like its 5 cylinder sporty sound...

If the price is right, shop it
