Volvo on its 180 km/h speed limit: we’re not playing ‘Big Brother’

Volvo Cars says its decision to introduce a 180 km/h speed limit on all of its new vehicles does not represent a “Big Brother approach”.

In May 2020, the Swedish firm announced that all of its new models would be limited to 180 km/h, while acknowledging this could mean “losing potential customers”.

Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre, told Autocar 180 km/h “is still fast, so is it going to be the end of speeding? No, it’s not.”

“It’s a limitation, and there really is no reason to go faster,” she added.

“Everyone talks about speeding, but we wanted to do something to show we’re serious. That will initiate an in-depth dialogue on the subject.”

Ekholm explained Volvo wasn’t attempting to define a “safe speed” for motorists.

I'll say it again - well done Volvo. You're standing up for what you believe in. That shows balls, guts and backbone. I agree that there's no reason to go faster. I don't necessarily agree that a hard speed limit is the way to go, but that's not my fight. Well done.

Virtue signalling. If they were limiting all their cars to 120km/h it might have been different.

Volvo says response to 180 km/h speed limit has been ‘mainly positive’

A Volvo Cars executive says the response to the Swedish firm’s decision to limit the top speed of all its new vehicles to 180 km/h has been “mainly positive”.

Alexander Petrofski, vice-president for Volvo’s large (90 series) cars division, told CARmag.co.za the company saw itself as an industry leader in terms of safety.

“Safety is part of our company purpose, and an absolute priority. For us at Volvo, we strive to lead in safety and that means we will go first in the industry in implementing safety measures,” he told us.

By your reasoning they should limit the speed to 120kmph, or whichever max speed holds for the country it's in.
Can you explain why it makes sense to block > 180kmph but not for example > 160kmph?
If they so concerned about safety why even make cars that allow people to drive over the speed limit at all?

One thing I'll tell you, not that I ever wanted to, but now I'll never buy a Volvo!

Off course it's positive, the majority of people and majority of Volvo's buyers/fans doesn't drive close to that, so why would they need anything faster. Most people I know will drive at their fastest, maybe 130 or 140 max.
Now if BMW or Toyota Fortuner would've limit their speed, then it would've been negative response from their fans.

It's just a practical limit, no one ever needs to go that fast. Most of us exceed 120 on a daily basis.

Can a fortuner even reach that speed?

Don't know, but they always flying past me when I'm cruising at 120/130. Seems they're always in a hurry somewhere.

True, together with the Hilux, Ranger and vivo cars. I sometimes wonder if there's a "how to be an arsehole" course that comes complementary with the purchase of some cars.

It shouldn't be a practical limit. If they want to prove a point they should stick to legal speed limits.

But then nobody would buy their cars. This way they get to feel good while doing ****all.

Maybe, but if it can prevent one Feetless soldier from coming up behind me on plattekloof hill at over 200km/h then why not? I would actually prefer they lower it to 160km/h.

160 still doesn't stop a footless one from taking you or anybody else out

At 160 I might have a bit more time to react, when the footless fool comes up at 250km/h I'm fckd. And not in the sense like @HunterNW does with his friends.

I still don't get the fuss, If you don't like the restriction then get another car without it - there is so much variety out there. If you personally feel getting a car with the restriction is in line with your views then get it - everyone can move on in their (un)restricted cars. The restriction also doesn't apply to current models so even if DO have a volvo you can still do 200kph...

I am not against Volvo's stance but I will not be getting one of these cars. Even though I don't plan on driving that fast, the idea that I can, if I wanted to, is one that appeals to me.
