Volvo to limit the top speed on all its cars to 180km/h

At first I thought it was a stupid idea, then I thought about it a bit more. My cars true top speed is around 203km/h, I've never been even almost close to that speed in the 3 and a half years I've had the car. Even in an emergency it wouldn't be safe driving over 180km/h. So why not, it might just stop some brainless moron from pulling a Tawfeetless maneuver.
You think!? Just don't hurt yourself

Now make it a law for all manufacturers. But limit it to 140.

For me there's a principle involved.

Who has ultimate control: Man or machine?

I deeply resent the idea that the machine can override my instructions in what is otherwise a perfectly legitimate mechanical manoeuvre.

The other implication is that Volvo are effectively saying their cars aren't safe over 180 km/h. Shame.
No cars are safe over 180kph *except* purpose built racing cars (Rally, F1, Indy, some hypercars etc)

Many cars on SA roads are around there anyway, all those 1.0 Picantos, Sparks, and mostly everything else is below 160km/h.
The trick here is 'limit'. Those lawnmowers are not limited, they just can't do it.:ROFL:

No car is safe if something goes wrong at 180km/h. Any survival is mostly lots and lots of good luck, in conjunction with good car design.

I'm actually not against this. In a free market, Volvo can do whatever they want with their product. If nobody buys it then so be it. Let the market decide if it's a dumb idea or not

Volvo also being a safety conscious car, fits in with their ethos.

I must be misunderstanding that. In no way does that amendment appear to absolve Arthur (and any other people here that break the law by speeding) from breaking the law.
There is no cosmic law about 120 km/h. It is a human artefact, and is not absolute - to suggest it is as @genetic does (he does not admit of exceptions) is to make a category error. The last time I was copped at around 160-170 km/h on a public road, the cops jumped in their car and escorted me to the hospital. We hit 180 km/h at times, on the road between Clarens and Bethlehem. I could have gione faster (and had on clear sections), but the cop car couldn't keep up. I was transporting a farm labourer who had been bitten by a rinkhals. He needed urgent medical attention. He was lying on the back seat of the Audi 2.4. He lived. I was not fined or locked up, as @genetic said I would be.
