Volvo has always been slaves to safety, I don't know why it's hard to believe that this is just Volvo being what they have always been.
100% Agree. Don't know why this "theory'' is even being considered.

Volvo begins introduction of 112mph (180km/h) speed limit

Swedish firm says new speed cap is designed to spark discussion, help owners become better drivers

Volvo has begun the introduction of a 112mph speed cap for all its cars, with the head of the firm’s Safety Centre saying the move is not about limiting owners, but helping them to be "the best drivers they can possibly be’.

The Swedish firm announced the limit last year, as part of a wider safety plan to help reduce road traffic deaths to zero. The speed cap is now being rolled across its whole range as new model year updates are introduced. Previously, top speeds ranged from 118mph to 155mph.

All Volvo vehicles will also feature a new Care Key, which will allow owners to set additional limits on the top speed of vehicles, of between 31mph and 112mph. It will also owners who lend their car to family members to prevent them from going above a certain speed.

“We believe that a car maker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Malin Ekholm, who heads the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

The 112mph cap still exceeds regulations in virtually every country, but Ekholm said it was intended to serve to both limit speeds and to promote a discussion on safety. “We decided there really is no reason to go faster than 112mph” Ekholm told Autocar. “112mph is still fast, so is that going to be the end of speeding? No, it’s not, but it’s still a limitation. Everyone talks about speed and speeding, and we wanted to do something to show that we’re serious.”

Taufiq will certainly not approve! He only starts at 280km/h.

Yeah, don't know why dj_dyno is bringing up wild theories. Volvo might just think they can make still fatalities 0 (a stated goal) at 180km/h, while they know one just cannot possibly do that at over 200km/h

What principle? German cars have had their speed capped at 250km/h for ages, 180km/h is just another number.

Same thing with many PC components that need to be overclocked for full performance. You Android guys root your phones all the time to remove limits.
The slippery slope principle. 250 yesterday, 180 today and tomorrow your car will automatically issue you with a fine if you go above the legal limit on any road.

Big difference between the government imposing limits (like amounts of alcohol you can keep at home, or ammo for your guns) and a private company selling a product with reduced capabilities. Volvo can't give you a fine. Would be a totally different story if they could, but they can't.

Obviously when it comes to that point the big corporation would have partnered with government to do it.

The people that currently print and post your AARTO fines are a private company with a government tender, just FYI.

I'm not saying Volvo as a private company shouldn't have the right to make shít cars if they so chooses. Obviously they can produce whatever they please.

They are keeping their reputation for safety where it should be. Removing these limitations will be easy to do and will void warranty (which benefits the dealerships). I think 180 isn't much safer than 200 but fewer people would void warranty by removing a 200 cap than a 180 cap.

Every new Volvo vehicle is now limited to a top speed of 180 km/h.

Volvo Cars has announced that all of its new models now come with a limited top speed of 180 km/h, acknowledging this could mean “losing potential customers”.

The Swedish firm made the announcement after first signalling its intention to send a “strong signal about the dangers of speeding” back in March 2019.

In addition, Volvo says every one of its new vehicles will come with a “Care Key”, which allows the owner to set “additional limitations on the car’s top speed, for example before lending their car to other family members or to younger and inexperienced drivers”.

“We believe that a car-maker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars safety centre.

“Our speed limiting technology, and the dialogue that it initiated, fits that thinking. The speed cap and Care Key help people reflect and realise that speeding is dangerous, while also providing extra peace of mind and supporting better driver behaviour.”

Yeah that I know. Same with the eTolls. My point is just that when a company makes a product decision that totally in line with their motto of the past 50 years, there's no point in getting all fussy about it and calling it a "matter of principle". Volvo has always been about safety. Always. That's been their focus since forever. We all know speed kills. Without going into the whoo-haas about that, if you go faster you have a bigger chance of dying, period. Them limiting the speeds is completely understandable. To be honest I'm surprised they didn't do it even lower, like 140km/h for example.

Ja because I'm a kak driver at 181km/h and 179 is safe.

This is draconian rubbish - might as well call it Corona regulation speed.

Maybe they demand better competition?

I don't find it hard to believe, and if it stopped at limiting their vehicles to 180 km/h, I would just have chalked it up to Volvo being Volvo. It's the geofencing I have a problem with, and note that I didn't even mention the 180 km/h speed limiter in my previous post at all.

complete BS.

Mostly agree. They did try and make some more "sporty" cars in the last 10 years.

Irrelevant. Why are you defending them? Do you plan on buying a Volvo? Are you some kind of Volvo fan boy?

It's not irrelevant and there is nothing to defend. I just like to point out what a bunch of morons some of you are to get worked up about something you have no real interest in.
