I am trying to get a wireless link up on a Atom board running Voyage Linux, the firmware-atheros and wireless tools are installed.

#iwconfig shows the usb wireless dongle as follows;
IEEE 802.11abg ESSID:eek:ff/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:eek:ff Fragment thr:eek:ff
Encryption key:eek:ff
Power Management:eek:ff

#ifconfig wlan0 up gets me wlan0: link is not ready

Any ideas where to go from here please.

Some atheros devices are called ath0, is your naming correct? You snipped of the relevant part in your post.

Code:
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth1      no wireless extensions.

[B]wlan0 [/B]    IEEE 802.11bg  ESSID:"xxxxx"  Nickname:"rtl_wifi"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.437 GHz  Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s   Sensitivity:0/0
          Retry:off   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=100/100  Signal level=100/100  Noise level=0/100
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

vboxnet0  no wireless extensions.

What instructions are you following? Since it is a stripped down version of Debian, try this:
http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi

wlan0 is the correct name for the interface

Thanks for the links ...

Are the same as ones Google provided ...

Do I need wpa_supplicant installed?

If you are using encryption, yes.

Okay, then I am going to need a wpa_supplicant.conf file ...

Where do I put the shared key in /etc/network/interfaces using the following

wpa-psk mysecretpassphrase

or in wpa_supplicant.conf or both?

according to the wiki links from earlier, /etc/network/interfaces

Something that looks similar to this:
Code:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-ssid mynetworkname
    wpa-psk mysecretpassphrase

Right ... except I had a spelling mistake, which is now fixed

wpa_supplicant.conf looks like follows;

Code:
crtl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel

network={
	ssid="home"
	#psk="0004ed5bafde"
	psk=5a891f992674f8ca8d270882161a7b40a2f51105dbeb79670273b68bc9531ba9
}

iwconf as follows;

Code:
wlan0     IEEE 802.11abg  ESSID:"home"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: 00:04:ED:5B:AF:DE
          Bit Rate=1 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=70/70  Signal level=-37 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

ifconfig as follows;

Code:

Now I am fighting with a "No DHCP offers" message, and am wondering if my router is being a little tardy in handing out DHCP addresses .... , but I now have to leave that for another day ...

is it broadcasting on the correct subnet? first go with static IP until you sure everything is pinging / natting / etc. nicely.

Not sure, when the wi-fi stick is inserted, there is a line "cfg80211: Calling CRDA for country: DK ...

Have so far not been successful in changing this setting, as it might influence the channels the radio works on ...

The router A Telkom 5102G might also be slow at handing out DHCP leases, as sometimes, my WIN7 Laptop does not get a connection every time I switch it on.

Many thanks ...
