VPN access (openvpn) - Vodacom vs 8ta

I'm running into a weird issue, connecting to a VPN via Vodacom works just fine, but I get a timeout when going via 8ta.

This is also specific to Ubuntu and openvpn, everything works just fine on a Mac (using Tunnelblick).

There is a similar issue when I try to connect to an Amazon EC2 server.

Any ideas?
