SNO has its access to SAT3!

This article shows VSNL - aka the SNO - has some deep pockets. Here's an interesting snippet

A former state-run international telecoms monopoly now run by Tata conglomerate, VSNL said the deal would give it network access in 240 countries and territories and interests or capacity in more than 80 subsea and terrestrial cables.

You might ask - What are the chances SA is one of the 240 countries it just gained network access to?

Have a look at Teleglobe's network - http://www.teleglobe.com/en/our_network/default.asp To me it looks like they've got Sat3/SAFE access.

I read somewhere that VSNL invested $50 mil out of the $650 mil total cost for the cable. So that would make them the biggest shareholder in the consortium.

Anyone know how much Telkom invested ?

Even though they may have ownership in the SAT3 cable it does not necessarily mean they'll be able to access it in South Africa. Remember, only Telkom has landing rights at the moment so there is a chance that they would still need to work through Telkom.

Does telkom have the only landing rights because they were the only telephone company with SAT3 access in South Africa?

The SNO can land it elsewhere - they also own Tyco - one of the largest underseas cabling companies in the world.
