Seems I got it wrong... He had an Ubiquiti Edgerouter...
yep... I use Ubiquiti in my house, got the ER-X and 2 AP-LITEs.
I've actually configured the ADSL as failover only while I wait for Telkom to cancel, as the asynchronous routing with the dual WAN load-balancing was starting to cause packet loss issues when the kids were playing Fortnite.
Didn't even know the Fibre was down last week, until my neighbor told me.

I actually set up one of my old Asus AC1200 routers for my neighbor the past weekend, because he was having issues getting more than 5 devices on the MF AP.
Basically just as you did, turn off Wifi on MF AP and cable it up to the WAN port on the Asus and set it to use DHCP.

I'll take some screenshots when I'm at home later this evening and post the process here.

I went old school...got in the roof with my bier mag and LAN cable in tow... lost a liter or 2 sweating...pulled a muscle or 2 trying to be a contortionist getting through roof trusses and wired up each room...bought some trunking and tucked it in there so it all looks neat.

Was a bit unnecessary as 2 room's devices is fine on wifi...just our room which is furthest away from wifi that's connected via ethernet to usb port on Mi Box

I'm not sure how other houses in Mitchell's Plain is, but with my house in Rocklands there is normally 2 conduits and wall boxes in the one corner, one for plugs and looking at my in-laws house a Aerial point, one of them was empty for me, so I just used that to feed my cables up to the rest of the house, with a bit of crawling in the roof.

The thing is the MF APs I believe are configured to be auto provisioned from the OLT and it uses a completely different login/access as the EPUser that we use to logon to the device as a customer/end user.
Because of that we can't put it in a simple bridge mode and handle the PPPoE connection our selves like we did with ADSL or other normal fibre providers, hence the reason they say we should never press the reset button or the configs that tell the ONT where to get the full configs from along with the auth, get removed. This setup is what also lets them change the configs and provision the device on the fly.

TLDR.... that device will never do Bridge mode and anyone who says they got it right, is either lying or they using the incorrect terminology or straight out don't know what they talking about.
But then again, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about;)

I'm not a network guy but it sounds like you know a lot more...

What's the pros and cons of
1. The way mine is setup: WiFi off, LAN to WAN on my Asus with DHCP?
2. Them being in control of their router to "change things on the fly" and not allow bridge mode?

So here are the steps that I got working on my side, basically the same as what Nikkels posted a while back.

Simple setup
  1. Configure your router with all your normal settings, Wifi, DHCP, etc. or just leave as is if you are going to use an existing router.

  2. Connect the supplied LAN cable, in the box the ONT came in, to the WAN interface of your Router and any interface (probably LAN1) of the ONT.

  3. Configure the WAN on your router to use DHCP instead of PPPoE.
    * if you'd like, override dns with Google DNS(8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) or my personal favCloudFlare DNS (1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1)
    * If you don't want to use DHCP, you can set it to static and use IP 192.168.18.3 (if that's your range, otherwise use any ip address matching your range starting from .3 and upwards) and set the gateway to .1, eg. IP 192.168.18.3
    Gateway 192.168.18.1

  4. Logon to the ONT, was IP address 192.168.18.1 for me with user = Epuser and Pass = userEp, but the logon details should be at the bottom of the ONT
    741845

  5. On first logon, it should prompt you change the default password, do so now, don't ever leave default passwords.

  6. You should be presented with the default Home Page, giving you status of the WAN and Wifi, etc.
Click on the Wifi Configuration and click the Enable button to turn Wifi off. 741847
And that should be it.

Advanced extras:
Here are some extras that I did along with the above settings:
Always click on Apply when making a change.
All advanced sections can be found by clicking on the Gear icon to the left.

  1. Under Advanced > LAN > DHCP Server, extend the DHCP Lease time.
I did this as I found it was causing weird issues with the default 1 hour lease.
If you like, maybe just disable the DHCP all together and use Static IP on your Router's WAN config.
disabling DHCP and using static IPs would ensure no one can just plug something directly into the ONT and bypass your router or firewall you may have with out having to set a static IP
    741853

  2. Not really needed, but I set a static lease for my Router.

    741857

  3. If you like me and you have a VPN or other stuff running inside my network that I want to get to from the outside or you even do torrents with static ports and don't use UPnP for security reasons or you use UPnP anyway (hopefully secured and not open ), enable the DMZ function.
What this is supposed to do is forward all incoming connection not already established, i.e incoming packets that don't match outgoing packets, to your Router.

2. Them being in control of their router to "change things on the fly" and not allow bridge mode?

  1. The Pros of that is you control everything on your own device, except the actual Fibre Connection.
Con is that you need to do a bit more config, like if you use UPnP for gaming and torrents.
You don't actually need to do this, we like doing because it gives us extra control, but you could just setup your Asus as AP instead of as a Router, like with these instructions:
But I would definitely change the default DHCP settings which makes it difficult for a large amount of devices to connect and stay connected.

  2. With them currently controlling the config and automating it, makes it so much easier for them to allow you to swap ISP or even make changes to the network on the fly and cuts down on support cost I suppose.
Can you image if a setting needs to change, they would need let all their users in MP know what needs to change, most of whom probably don't know how to change the settings.
I think the whole reason behind any of their decisions was to drive costs down whilst still providing good service.

It's not difficult to bridge a modem for Fibre service, plug lan cable into Wan or Eth port and setup modem for that. Wan interface set to Eth/Wan and Wan type set to dynamic/ipoe. That should do the trick, no changes is needed for the ONT
