So it is exactly what we said in our application, Vuma will eventually give access directly or indirectly to anyone who pays and not adhere strictly to the "use for security purposes" clause.

We wanted to do what Vuma is doing and got shut down by the city, and now Vuma is allowed to do the exact same thing, all I see is money talks.

Think that has more to do with fires. I'm sure you could also throw a bin bag out the window without consequences. AFAIK, there is a bylaw about no stompies out car windows, not about littering, about starting veld fires. Wish there was littering laws.

MyBroadband had questioned Vumacam over claims made by a reader that the cameras were being used by insurance companies for “non-criminal investigations”.
AFAIK, insurance fraud is a criminal offense.

Example:
  • Run a red robot, crash, then claim from insurance the robot was green.
  • Carjacking gets disputed by video showing you shaking hands, taking a bag of money, handing over the keys with the thief.
If this helps to improve driving and reduce insurance claims (and premiums), then I'm for it.

License plate recognition over time generates very accurate movement patterns
for a vehicle. The power is not the camera, but the database.

Excellent crime fighting tool given it is in the right hands - total disaster in the
wrong hands.

You just need 1 member of a syndicate/saps in the video control room..

Ticking time bomb..

Just another thing that will eventually be used against you. It will never work in this corrupt place - you can get access to their live or recorded feed for your own purposes, for a bit of money and do whatever you wish with the information.

Just as water always flows towards the lowest point, data always flows towards the highest amount of money.

Good.

Might result in lower premiums for the rest of us if more fraudsters get caught out.

Does Vuma have the cameras on poles in Cape Town?

Nope. Never seen them here in CPT.

The only extensive CCTV camera network is run by the City of Cape Town themselves.

The Metro Police Strategic Surveillance Unit oversees nearly 800 CCTV cameras across the metropole, excluding cameras monitoring the freeways and transport routes and interchanges.
