Vumacam nailing criminals

Vumacam and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) have reported multiple successes in the fight against crime in South Africa's biggest city.

These successes resulted from the SafeCity Initiative, which combines private and public law enforcement resources and leverages Vumacam's vast network of street pole-fitted cameras.

In theory, you could cover 99% of all roads by strategically placing cameras at intersections where a vehicle would have to travel to leave an area or suburb. I would like to see the technology extended to recognise vehicle make/model and colour, so that numberplate-less and cloned vehicle plates could also be tracked/followed.

Just here to see how long before someone shouts "my POPI rights"

Come on don't jump right in to being a "anti woke" keyboard warrior.
Don't be a hater.
an to answer your question in South Africa there is no expectation of privacy in public places, so Vumacam in the clear
There are legitimate concerns. There's regulations on the horizon that would prevent your security cameras from even getting a glimpse outside your yard yet these companies can freely operate. And it's not so clear. Editorial coverage is included but mass surveillance actually is not. While you may not have privacy from onlookers you can expect to have privacy from large scale monitoring and the data mining that can be done with these can reveal a lot more than what you reveal to the public. There's going to be some landmark rulings on what privacy is.

Already exists:
Vehicle identification is a technology that identifies vehicles by reading their plate characters and features including color, type, manufacturer, and even travel direction – all automatically with algorithm-embedded cameras at entrances & exits or on the roadways.

Or using the eToll cameras for it ...

Very true. But it covers a very different spectrum of traffic too... lots of lost potential.
Using those gantries for simple traffic management would be a better use of resources.
Last time I was on the N1 in Joburg, there was a truck doing 40 km/h in the middle lane at 7:45 AM, which I got stuck behind.

In a civilised country, that truck would have been automatically detected by the gantries as a hazard, police would have been dispatched and summarily executed the driver on the side of the road.
