Vumatel became available in my area recently, and I have to say, I have mixed feelings about whether or not to bother to sign up.
The first thing I noticed is that they're one of the most expensive Fibre line providers, at least as far as entry-level packages are concerned.
I'm currently on a 4Mb ADSL line which is working perfectly for my download speed requirements. The only incentive for me to move to Fibre would be the prospect of significantly improved upload speed.
Vumatel's entry level Fibre Package is only 4Mb Down and 1Mb up. It may be double what a 4Mb ADSL line offers, but it's still not fast enough to be in any way useful for me.
A 2Mb upload speed would've been adequate, but Vuma only offers that on their 20Mb and higher packages. Openserve's Entry level package is 4/2 for example.
Is there a reason why Vuma only offers 1Mb upload on their 4Mb packages, or is it just to incentivise people to upgrade? I mean, Vuma's 20/20 would be awesome, but it's just not affordable for me. Their 20/2 package is a cruel joke though, similar to VDSL as far as upload goes.
I understand that not everyone needs a reasonable upload speed, but at this point, my monthly cost on ADSL is still over R100 per month cheaper than the cheapest equivalent package from Vuma, and that's not even taking the R1,710 installation fee into account.
I'm sure there'll come a time when Fibre becomes more affordable, but for now, I'll just have to stick with ADSL.
