Vumatel installed a CPE in my house in Glenvista but said to my wife the" pop" is not working not sure if she heard correctly, i still do not have an ISP for fibre , I am still with telkom and MWEB on adsl at the moment. I just read now that i can just connect with a laptop via Lan cable to the CPE and set up an account with VUMATEL. I will have to try tonight only the blue light is flashing at the moment ( POWER). My ADSL router has WLAN port so will wait and then set it up once i have an ISP. Should i pay the R1710 straight to Vumatel before choosing an ISP. any advice.

When a orange light goes on the fibre will be active and you can plug your laptop into the lan port to order a service once you registered on the vuma portal. You pay vumatel after you have chosen a ISP, and only after the connection is active and working. Either by a EFT or 6 month debit order.
So all you can do is wait till it's active before doing anything

No you pay vumatel once your cpe is installed. It's completely separate from isp.

He could have referred to the point of presence in the area. This is the site that links your entire area's fibre to the back haul of Vumatel. Just have to wait till they have everything linked up.

For god's sake don't do this, you're just asking for additional steps to get yourself online.

Firstly, be prepared... know the service you want to get and get the appropriately powered router. Below 50Mb I think you can safely use any router. Going up to 100Mb and above you may want to spend a bit more to get the throughput you need.

Personally I like the Ubiquiti PowerEdge range, but there are some good Mikrotik / other devices.

Once you have this, make sure the WAN port is set to accept DHCP.
Then and only then, do you plug the router into the CPE.
Plug your laptop into the Router and select your ISP from there.

It may have change since i last activated, but it was a pain to change from my laptop plugged into the CPE to the router being plugged in.
P.S. Don't go for the lunkheads that supply you a router but don't allow you access to it because they lock it down and configure it themselves. That's just asking for support calls for port forwarding OR having an all port forward to yet another devices that you can configure.

Cool Ideas (PBCool on the forum) are leader of the ISP pack atm ;)

If you do it the correct way then there are no additional steps. But some people start unplugging router and then laptop and at some point they lock it down and if your laptop was in there at that point you will have issues.
Suppose I was lucky, mine only got locked down a few days later as I was able to use laptop or router and both was able to access the Vumatel portal through lan 1 on the cpe

Should the WAN Connection Type be IPoE: Automatic IP for it to work with the CPE?

My ASUS has a couple of options. Currently using above mentioned with my WISP.

Will the same setting work with the CPE?

What I did about the MAC address was used my laptop and took note of the MAC address. Now whenever I need to change routers (once so far courtesy of a lightning strike) I just clone that MAC address onto the router. So if I ever have problems for any reason, I know what MAC address works and don't need to involve my ISP (Cool Ideas)

Flashing blue means no fibre, it may still need to be patched at your street cabinet or there are issues at the POP itself as you mentioned.

Same thing happened to me, but I was part of the first batch of installations.

I just waited for the date we received from the regular updates we received for our neighbourhood.

Like the others have said, just be careful about plugging your laptop in. Its a bit of a chicken and the egg situation if you need the router from your ISP. When you finally get the router, and the internet will only work with your laptop directly plugged into the CPE, just give your ISP a call and they will refresh the mac address (or something) on their side.

Update : fx light was orange on the 7th December, contacted Mweb asked for a 50/5 package on the 8th, they said my ADSL will go off on the 8th and sent me a new adsl logon, Vumatel sent a mail and said my fibre will be active on the 12th, Mweb then said once i receive the router just plug it in and i would have internet on the fibre.
I lost internet on the 8th as MWEB said i would but could not log in with new account from mweb for the adsl.
I then just plugged my routers WAN port into the CPE changed my router from ADSL modem router to router only and i was connected.
I now have the Wireless gateway from Mweb lying on my desk. It was a lot easier than i envisaged.
