The Remgro-controlled Vumatel has announced the 10Gbit/s trial, which it is conducting in partnership with Internet service provider Cool Ideas, as it celebrates rolling out fibre-optic broadband cables past a million homes in South Africa.

Very exciting times! Unfortunately don't see myself getting 10Gbps within the next three years but very keen to see 2.5Gbps or even 1Gbps with a better upload ratio...

Now CISP can deal with clients running 100Mbit routers from 2014 wanting to upgrade! :p

Think the hardware upgrade is going to be expensive as hell, pfsense+10gb netw cards, 10gb switch, cat6/a cable...
Why PFsense? Get a Mikrotik, secure it properly, and no need to play with a system that can do 10Gb

Would be good to see which brands offer 10Gb routing for a decent (affordable) price. But yes its more then the router, the switch and cable also need to be uograded. Interestong times

Which of the Mikrotik that is capable of 10gbps would you recommend?
Many people say the RB4011 is more than capable of doing 10Gb/s and maybe more. Just runs a little warm, but seems like its designed that way. The CCR1036 is also great for 10Gb and has a few SFP+ ports to help with that, but its fairly expensive

Colour me sceptical. Very few homes even have gear for 1gbps wifi or Ethernet capable of > 1gbps

Yeap... Even like our TV's - all our tv's are 4k Smart tv's, < 2 years old - they all only have 100mbps ethernet ports. Of course, it's TV's and most 4k content streams just fine at 100mbps.

But at the end of the day, their 10Gbps thing is probably largely just a marketing thing.

Awaiting headlines, "Fastest home internet in South Africa - Vumatel".

I'm trying to think of practical (legal) reasons one would need 10Gbps at home for

I have a 100mb/s line and can't see the point in going to 200. So 10Gbit/s is madness. Also, I don't think you'll get high speeds from servers abroad. Maybe max 400mb/s?

Of course. They can't be the cheapest or are actually expensive so lets throw money at the problem to fix it and become the 10Gbps isp. Corporate 101.

10Gbps?

/raises hand for free trial, testing and all that...
