Frontal crash tests are done at 64km/h as standard.

But some were into an object on the driver's side, some an object on both sides and the one with the bus was a whole wall. Difficult to compare the results.

It's safe to say that South Africans are very naive when it comes to saftey features in our vehicles. In Europe nobody touches a car that doesn't have a great N-Cap rating.

A prime example is that south african actress that died in a Smart car recently. She hit a Renault (note N-Cap rating). The renault was barely damaged and yet the Smart car was completely stuffed. She died and the other occupants in the Renault were all fine.

We aren't strict enough when it comes to safety in our vehicles and on the roads in this country and we pay the price for it. You wouldn't catch me dead (pardon the pun) in an Uno, Citi Golf or any other vehicle that doesn't have airbags.

Yeah, and is it just me or is the Citi with airbags even more dangerous, given the fact that the car will crumple around you and then BLAM an airbag will crush whatever is left of you when it deploys at 180km/h or whatever speed airbags deploy at?

Lol good point! Being in a sardine can when an airbag deploys could be even more dangerous

I have also seen an accident where a Citi was T-boned by a double-cab and also cut in two. There were 3 off-duty SAPS offices in the car, 2 died, and one was in a critical condition.
It really wasn't a pleasant sight, there was a leg lying about 30m away from the male occupant that died.

I also feel that these cars are well past their sell-by date, and should've been scrapped from roads decades ago

Check the video link I posted. There is a Chinese SUV called a "LandWind" and it shows how an airbag can help kill you in a poorly constructed car, such as the Sh1t1 Golf.

Hey, I try to do something good at least once a day :)

I whorship the ground you walk on ! ;)

They have much better cars like the Gol and Fox, but then again they are a Nazi company so what do you expect...

Do you also blame Apartheid for the mess at the SAUK ?

Any car can split in too when hitting a tree! I don't drive a Golf but stop giving it the fault!
Crap drivers are also the cause for accidents!

Sure, but with a ****1 Golf you get that splitting effect at much lower speeds.
Like when you forget to pull up the handbrake sometimes and the rolls down the drive way :p

But yes - you are right - it is not the ****1's fault - it is the fault of whom ever was stupid enough to go an buy the damn thing :D

Just bear in mind that the Smart is a safe car too. However, when two cars collide, generally speaking the bigger/heavier one will come off best. That's why, when you look at actual accident death statistics, the safest vehicles are the big ones.

The Smart is a much safer (and better) car then the Citi (or most other VWs IMHO) but you must remember that to keep its passenger cell in tact it is very hard and there is not a lot to absorb impact.

The key thing is that the Smart stays intact while deforming to the max. A Citi just breaks apart or does something random and completely unexpected. For the structural size advantage it has over a Smart it is an pathetic excuse of a car when it comes to safety (and more other things IMHO).

Here you can see a Smart VS an S-Class - notice how much the Smart have to give way to the S-Class :

And the classic Smart safety video made by fifth gear where its up against a wall with a 2 star Corsa B (Lite) :

Holy Smokes ! That's bad....

No matter what car it was, going sideways at that speed will most likely break it in two.
