VW golf tsi dsg or manual

As a word of caution, wife had 2 golf 7 dsg's out of the box. First one turbo had issues at 8000kms, clutch was replaced at 12000kms and at 25000kms the actual gearbox had to be replaced. After a long fight vw relented and she was given a new car. Replacement started giving the same trouble at 10000kms so we sold it off and got something other than a vw.

What was the "same trouble"?

Turbo going at 8000km tells me it's a thermal issue with heat cycling. Does wifey start it and then smashes it? Was this her first Turbo car? If not, how long did the previous one last?

I'm not saying you didn't get a lemon, it happens, but I also agree that it seems highly unlikely that two would fail in a row with the exact same symptoms.


What did you end up buying? A non-turbo?

If you enjoy driving go with the manual, if you see it as a chore get the dsg.

That's a bit of a falsehood there that only applies to people who have never lived with a DSG.

It is NOT a conventional automatic.

I'm a petrolhead, I enjoy driving and I've enjoyed it even more since going DSG because now I actually focus on the road and my driving technique and not playing with a stokkie while driving.

I hardly even use the manual paddles because there really is no need. Only when I'm alone in the car and really smashing it on a familiar road again and again where I want to specifically use gears as a speed limiter on corners.

But like I said earlier TEST DRIVE them all and then decide.

Turbo had a part that needed to be replace, 6 week lead time in both instances.

My wife is a very sedate driver, if it was me then I'd accept driver fault, but she's frustratingly careful.

Got a BMW 116i to replace the second golf, no issues.

Problem is you can enjoy driving and still opt for a STronic because you're stuck in Johannesburg traffic most the time.

I went from auto to manual 9 months back and I'm already trading back for auto. I'm in traffic more than the time I cm enjoy the car

And I would argue you are stuck in the Stone Age. :)

Technology has moved on, some of the best sports cars in the world don't even come with a manual option any more for good reason.

Hi Mike, is it a lengthy repair process covered by warranty i assume? Is the drive worth the trouble?

They had it for 1 day. Was pretty quick. Circuit board burnt or something. Cost was just over R7k and covered by Audi under plan.

And ye - the drive is worth it. I love playing in this car. I think once used to S-Tronic / DSG, it will be hard to drive anything else.

There have been many instances in robot to robot scuffs that my S-Tronic has given me an advantage. Even against a Porsche. I **** you not!

EDIT: When I collected my car, I expressed my concern over maintenance costs on the transmission. Audi Airport told me out of plan, Audi SA will cover 70% of the repair costs. Check with VW to see if the same applies to DSG (it should?). This has made it a no brainer to keep my car (7000km left). I have taken a their party warranty though - just in case.

Was this warranty or maintenance plan that fixed it? Vw only comes with 3 year warranty .. which third party did u get and what's the cost that i should budget for?

It got fixed under Audi motor plan. Warranty I just took out yesterday in preparation for my motor plan expiring in 7000km.
Cost was R7.5k for 2 years. I can't remember with who though. Will check tomorrow when at my PC.
